It is a tradition to draw a killmark on planes that have won an air victory or successfully performed hit-to-kill bombing operation.

On October 11, 2018, the Belgian Air Force technical personnel who performed maintenance and repair operations on an F-16AM belonging to the Belgian Air Force stationed at the Florennes Air Base accidentally fired the gun of the plane. The bullets from the six-barrel 20mm M61 Vulcan gun, which constituted the barrel firepower of the platform, hit another Belgian F-16 parked on the opposite side. One aircraft, which was prepared for the flight and waited with its fuel, was detonated as a result of the accident and became unusable by burning.Another F-16, located right next to the platform, was slightly damaged by flames and scattered particles.

Belgian Air Force handled this accident with a witty approach, they draw a killmark on the F-16AM Block 20MLU, which destroyed one friendly aircraft and caused another to be damaged.

Thus, the platform received the sign, even if it did not win an air victory.

Second jet is ok now?

If they really did this, it's easily the most stupid thing I've ever seen a modern air force do willingly. What kind of brainless rubbish is this? Is their c/o some hippie drinking hemp infused soy milk and awaiting gender reassignment??

Some prick in maintenance wrecks a jet fighter and he or she gets rewarded with this "very funny haha let's make a meme out of your stupidity" b.s. so that you don't feel emotionally hurt over your incompetent actions.

It's more or less friendly fire....shall we put kill markings for all friendly fire episodes?

Even IAF - those experts in award fabrication - will chuckle at this debauchery.

my understanding is that the plane weapons are disarmed ammo and missiles taken out when taken for maintenance and even during maintenance I dont expect the staff to press the fire button but maybe I am wrong

A valuable lesson than can be adopted by the IAF. They can do one for the Mi-17.

Unfortunately the Belgians aren't the only ones to have this dark/crude sense of humour if it can be described as such

I couldn't find a picture but the F14 in question in the above video was reportedly given an American flag kill marking

Its funny how we Pakistanis are so emotionally attached to the F-16s that we show them affection as if they are also people
F-16 is the most beautiful man-made object ever.

Remarkable story. And extremely confusing that the tomcat got a kill marking.

Is this a normal thing to do?? Am I the one missing something here?

Does it serve as a "mark of shame"?

Bro, dont think that Belgian or Netherland-like countries have equal with Pakistan's or India's sortie density or rapid response capacity. Even Turkish and Greek pilots, often enter dogfights, i mean almost every day. The region with the highest flight times in Europe is the Aegean Sea. Turkish and Greek air force have very serious advantages in this regard.

But, When we look at the other end of Europe, Life is very boring in there. :D These planes do not even have very busy flight times, except for NATO missions and exercises.

The defense budgets are already shrinking in most of western side of EU, and it lowers the level of readiness for the War. Because the threat perception is very limited. That's why Trump is trying to put Europe under pressure, and we'll see the results over time.

As a result, the Belgian Air force can handle humorously an event that would create a very serious crisis in countries like us. And its really good humor. :D

Well your explanation for this incident is perhaps reasonable. But the tomcat vs phantom incident posted by someone else resulted in serious injury to the phantom pilot, yet the tomcat apparently got a kill mark on it for this friendly fire episode! I don't think the phantom pilot found that humorous at all.
