Bangladesh Coast Guard today detained over 519 Indian fishermen along with 32 fishing trawlers in the coastal areas of Patuakhali on charge of intruding into Bangladesh.

A patrol team of coast guard detained the fishermen in Moudubi area of Rangabali upazila’s Ramnabad channel near the Bay of Bengal around 1:30pm, Md Monibur Rahman, Kalapara upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), confirmed it.

Exact number of the detained fishermen could not be known immediately, the UNO said quoting the executive magistrate present on the spot.

The fishermen claimed that they accidentally entered Bangladesh due to the stormy weather.

They were being taken to Kalapara upazila coast guard outpost from Rangabali, the UNO added.

Further interrogation and legal steps will be conducted, he said.

Boats to be sent back after the weather becomes favorable, says Coast Guard

Some 32 Indian fishing boats, with 519 fishermen on-board, have drifted into Bangladesh’s maritime territory, reportedly due to strong waves, and stormy weather.

The boats are now waiting at the Rabnabad channel, near Payra sea port at Patuakhali, to get back to Indian territorial waters, The Detective Branch of Bangladesh Coast Guard said in a statement on Monday.

“The boats and fishermen are safe now. They will be sent back into the Indian maritime boundary when the weather becomes favorable,”
Bangladesh Coast Guard Assistant Director M Hamidul Islam.

“The Indian Coast Guard has been informed in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between India, and Bangladesh,” he added.

Nice to see that our friendly neighbouring country is concerned about the safety and well-being of our Indian fishermen.

Yep, we missed a chance to help the environment...

These are poor people, you can't kill them just for intruding or stealing. I certainly don't want to see Bangladesh acting paranoid schizophrenic like a neighbor does.
How about helping india to reduce her criminal population?

They might be lying. Patuakhali coast is deep inside Bangladesh territorial water. They have intruded minimum 100 nautical miles even if they entered from the West Bengal direction.

Good to see that our BCG investments in fleet operations is paying off. I understand that this sort of thing used to happen routinely because our BCG fleet was deficient and patrols were irregular, but no longer.

Yes I suspect that. There are big catches while sea is rough and they intrude our territory in hordes knowing minimal enforcement.
