BBC reporter faces calls to resign after comment at Paris rally

Just disappointed in the lack of understanding in this world people who are having a laugh should not be allowed to on the basis of religion. Anyway the number of serious posters that are leaving this forum should be noted also.

Don't be disheartened brother. I learnt pretty early on when i started my studies that people are not your friends, brother, sister, mother or father.

They will say what they want, they may say things that offend you, upset you, please you or hurt you. It's how to carry yourself and your conduct that determies the outcome.

Violence is never the answer, nor is censoring. Lead your thoughts to become words that transform into positive action.
You will always be judged by your actions and when we are angry or hurt remember they are two things that you can't put back in when they come out: toothpaste out of a tube and the words out of your mouth.

.
Isn't it funny how those who want to advocate for open debate in this thread for their preferred ones to spout "good extremist" garbage are the same ones who want to bully a free press into not publishing cartoons and end up looking like insecure twit themselves, while claiming otherwise? :D

.
Je Suis Willcox?? What do you guys think? Surely he has the freedom of speech to make such a comment, (which is 100% true) even though it can be said it was in bad taste. However he should not be made to step down over it.

BBC reporter faces calls to resign after he tells daughter of Holocaust survivors after Paris attacks: 'Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well'
  • Tim Willcox was covering yesterday's Paris rally for the BBC News channel
  • He spoke to participants during a live broadcast from the streets of Paris
  • One woman he spoke to expressed fears Jews were being persecuted
  • She told him 'the situation is going back to the days of the 1930s'
  • Willcox replied: 'Many critics though of Israel's policy would suggest that the Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well'
  • Comments sparked anger and calls for him to resign
  • Willcox has apologised for offence caused by 'poorly phrased question'

This is enough to expose West media's freedom of speech. Soon Israel and whole west will pay for their crimes against Muslims

.
Freedom of speech is a deception which they use then it suites them and it is not a rule or law, it is a handy instrument which is not always needed or useful but at times when they need to deny respect to a fraction or a group.

Freedom of speech is not is permission to go out of mind, it is freedom within boundaries and where my suffering starts, their boundaries end.

Here is where Wilcox may have crossed the line, according to the BBC's guidelines...

BBC - Editorial Guidelines - Guidelines - Section 4: Impartiality - Contentious Views and Possible Offence

His target expressed her concern about Jews being persecuted -- again -- in the manner of the 1930s. Wilcox was trying to be provocative but he used the wrong agent provocateur, so to speak, when he brought up the Israelis-Palestinians conflict. Anyone who even done a cursory study of history know that there is no comparison between the two.

His comment did not show BBC as impartial, if you look at the video he says critics of Israel and then states their view. No where does he imply this is the view of the BBC so I do not think these guidelines were breached. You can say he made the wrong comparison or that it was in bad taste but neither would be a big enough deal for him to step down.

Anyway he has apologized so that should be enough. Tim Willcox apologises to daughter of Holocaust survivor at Paris rally for saying 'Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well' - People - News - The Independent

He did not blame ordinary Jews in his comment. See video above.

BBC Reporter at Paris Rally: “Palestinians Suffer at Jewish Hands”

Barely had the French Jewish community time to get their heads around the appalling terror attack on a Paris kosher supermarket when the BBC’s Tim Willcox interviewed a Jewish woman at the January 11 solidarity rally in Paris. Interrupting her, Willcox says * :

Many critics of Israel’s policy would suggest that the Palestinians suffer hugely at Jewish hands as well.

Note that Willcox specifically says “Jewish” rather than “Israeli,” thus effectively holding French Jewry (and all Jews) responsible for the actions of Israel.

Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel” is included in the European Union’s Working Definition of Anti-Semitism while theU.S. State Department says: “Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, the state of Israel, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.

And for good measure, Willcox, when he fails to get his interviewee to agree with his offensive logic, adds:

But you understand; everything is seen from different perspectives.

Tim Willcox

This isn’t the first time that Tim Willcox has demonstrated disturbing behavior when it comes to Jews. As BBC Watchexplains, Willcox promoted the “Jewish lobby” trope on a BBC broadcast as recently as November 2014.

Tim Willcox’s inference that the Middle East conflict can in any way explain or justify an attack on Jews in France or anywhere else in the world is simply appalling.

Willcox’s specific reference to “Jewish hands” is abhorrent and unacceptable and suggests that Jews worldwide should be held responsible for the actions of Israel. This clearly falls under the European Union’s Working Definition of Anti-Semitism.

Willcox has since “apologized” on Twitter...

...Willcox’s apology is not enough. The issue is more than one of a “poorly phrased question” and goes to the heart of how the BBC deals with the subject of Israel and anti-Semitism. The BBC needs to openly acknowledge the seriousness of this incident at a time of growing anti-Semitism and physical attacks on Jews.

HonestReporting CEO Joe Hyams adds:

We’ve been calling for the media to adopt the EUMC Working Definition of Anti-Semitism in order to avoid this very situation involving Tim Willcox. It’s no longer good enough to feign ignorance and claim that crossing the line into anti-Semitism was unintentional. It’s high time that a widely accepted definition of anti-Semitism is added to the BBC’s editorial guidelines. The BBC and its journalists need to wake up to the incitement and harm that their shoddy reporting is doing.

Tim Willcox must be held accountable for his latest outrageous interview. The BBC must not be allowed to sweep this under the carpet. HonestReporting subscribers must make their voices heard by lodging complaints to the BBC.

Please register your complaint with the BBC. (Choose options BBC News => TV News => BBC News Channel and then add “Coverage of Paris Rally” to the programme title and the date 11/01/2015.) The more complaints the BBC receives, the more likely it will be forced to act. See here for more on how to deal with the complaints process.

Tim Willcox was 100% correct, he stated many critics of Israel would suggest Palestinians suffer at Jewish hands as well. He was stating the viewpoint of critics of Israel, implying that he was blaming world jewry is laughable and an attempt to take this dudes job.

I think most Pakistanis posters really misunderstsand the concept of freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech means everyone can express their views without being censored, including those disagreeing your views. That means that everyone has the rights to disagree with your own view.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean everyone is OK with your statement. Everyone can disagree with your statement and even sue your for your statement as part of their own freedom of speech.

Those BBC reporters are not censored and are not silenced because of his views, only merely that the majority of the west do not agree with him.

I think most Pakistanis posters really misunderstsand the concept of freedom of speech.

In theory, even the RISK of the appearance of a reporter's biases being representative of the news agency is dangerous. In theory.
