Agartala: Four Bangladeshi intelligence officials who illegally entered Tripura were beaten up by villagers but were allowed to go back after Indian officials intervened, police said on Thursday.

Four other intelligence officials ran back to Bangladesh when these four were pounced upon by villagers in Boxanagar in Sipahijala district, police sources said here.

The incident took place on Wednesday night. The Bangladeshi officials, said to be district level intelligence officials, reportedly entered India in search of illegal drugs.

The Border Security Force rescued the Bangladeshi officials from the custody of the villagers, said a police officer on the condition of anonymity.

"As a goodwill gesture, the BSF handed them over to the Border Guards Bangladesh on Wednesday night itself," the officer said.

Bangladeshi security personnel have often entered Tripura but have been sent back without taking any legal action in view of the sensitive bilateral relations.

Tripura shares 856 km of border with Bangladesh. Parts of it remains unfenced and hilly, making trans-border movements easy.

bangladeshi villagers have hacked BSF personnel to death too.. you dont need training when you outnumber others.

Keyword: intelligence officials. Their skills need to be polished if villagers can catch them.

I don't expect to be a Doval who could stay undercover for years, though getting caught so easily while you are trying an illegal infiltration is comical.

Local police investigators, now become intelligence officers ...lol. its not like these guys were DGFI guys....

Dude all that happened was a bunch of local cops went looking for some phyncidyll drug deallers and strayed over to the villages on the indian side.

My only source of info was the news item in OP that called them 'intelligence' officers who tried an infiltration, which was the basis for my initial comment.

If these were your average Joe hawaldars, its still funny, though not remotely as embarrassing.

You laugh at your police / intelligence officials being trashed by some villagers in another country? Interesting.

Media spins are a norm all over the world, some are harmless, others not so.

Indian criminals are pushing illegal drugs, fertilizer, weapon in BD under patronize of BSF. So BD officers may have gone to take matters in their own hand.

The original news said nothing about being beaten....first article said 4 bangladeshi police investigators were caught looking for drug dealers by the BSF....then the next media outlet makes it 8 Bangladeshi investigators intrude, 4 are caught and 4 escape...then the media says 4 intelligence officers caught by villigers and beaten ...saved by the BSF.

Truth was that 4 local cops went looking for drug dealers in a border village area and strayed into indian villages. The villagers called the BSF and the villagers srounded the cops until the BSF got there. If these cops opened fire on indian villagers, it would have become a major incident...

Hmm.. whose truth? Both governments wish to dial this down, I don't expect Bangladesh government to accept such an embarrassing event.

Besides, its not hard to imagine that being police officers who strayed and a drug search being cover for more sinister intents.

Anyway, lets move on.

I can go by what Indian media reports and laugh at your officials / intelligence people. You can laugh at Indian media spin.
