Writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who was arrested in a case under the Digital Security Act, has died in jail.

The doctors declared the the 53-year old dead on arrival when he was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital after falling unconscious at Kashimpur High Security Prison in Gazipur on Thursday night, said Senior Jail Superintendent Md Gias Uddin.

The writer had no reported ailment and the cause of his death was not immediately clear.

Hailing from Narayanganj’s Araihajar, Mushtaq was one of the entrepreneurs of crocodile farming in Bangladesh. He actively wrote about different issues on social media.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested him at his home in Dhaka’s Lalmatia and cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore at Kakrail on May 5 last year amid the coronavirus crisis.

The duo, along with nine others, were charged with propagating disinformation against the government on social media.

“They both spread false information against the government and its coronavirus relief programmes on social media. They also made indecent remarks about Bangabandhu,” RAB-3 Company Commander Abu Zafar Mohammed Rahmatullah had said at the time.

SI Jamshedul Islam, who is investigating the case, had said Kishore had posted cartoons and posters on his Facebook account “Ami Kishore” criticising the government’s response to the coronavirus situation while Mushtaq shared several of them on his Facebook account.

In the case against them, the law enforcers also arrested Didarul Bhuiyan of Rashtrochinta, a group of political activists, and businessman Minhaz Mannan Emon.

Didarul and Mannan were later freed on bail, but the judge rejected several bail petitions of Mushtaq and Kishore while activists have demonstrated on several occasions demanding their release.

Mushtaq was sent to Dhaka Central Jail first and then transferred to the Kashimpur prison on Aug 24 last year.

The other accused in the case were Tasneem Khalil, the editor of Netra News living in Sweden, blogger Asif Mohiuddin who resides in Germany, journalist Shahed Alam who lives in the US, Zulkarnain Shayer Khan alias Sami who lives in Hungary and featured in a recent report of Al Jazeera, Ashiq Imran, Swapan Wahid, and Phillipp Schuhmacher.

The police dropped the charges against eight of them and sought to press formal charges against Mushtaq, Kishore and Didarul in the case.

The charges brought by the RAB in the case include running a disinformation campaign against Bangabandhu, the Liberation War and the pandemic to hurt the image of the government or state and create instability.

The RAB also claimed to have evidence that Mushtaq and Kishore had “conspired” with Tasneem, Zulkarnain, Shahed and Asif on WhatsApp and Messenger apps.

Leftist student organisations have blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka in protest against the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in jail following his arrest in a case under the Digital Security Act.

Hundreds of protesters marched in a procession to the intersection from Dhaka University’s TSC around 11am on Friday.

The hour-long blockade caused traffic congestion on all four sides of the major thoroughfare.

The protesters announced that a torch procession would be taken out from TSC in the evening, while also revealing a plan to surround the home minister’s office on Sunday. The protests ended with a rally towards the TSC around 12pm, bdnews24.com reports.

Mushtaq, 53, died at Kashimpur High Security Prison in Gazipur on Thursday night.

The two, along with nine others, were charged with propagating disinformation against the government on social media.

Members of progressive students’ organisations brought out a protest rally at TSC after the news of his death spread Thursday night.

“The government has been looting people and created a mafia system in the country. The country has become a police state. The government silenced the voices of the people with the Digital Security Act. Mushtaq was a victim of that. We strongly condemn the incident,” said Al Kaderi Joy, president of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front.

“We demand the repeal of the Digital Security Act immediately. All those arrested under the act must immediately be released or else the protests will continue.”

The doctors declared Mushtaq dead on arrival when he was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital after falling unconscious at Kashimpur High Security Prison, said Senior Jail Superintendent Md Gias Uddin.

The writer had no reported ailment and the cause of his death was not immediately clear.

Mushtaq’s Death in Jail

Foreign envoys in Bangladesh for probe into Mushtaq’s death in jail

Diplomatic Correspondent | Published: 23:46, Feb 26,2021 | Updated: 23:53, Feb 26,2021

Thirteen foreign ambassadors and mission chiefs in Dhaka on Friday expressed their grave concern about the death of Mushtaq Ahmed in custody and called for an independent inquiry on the matter.

The envoys who expressed their concern in a joint statement are representing 13 member countries of influential Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Mushtaq had been held in pre-trial detention since May 2020 under the provisions of the Digital Security Act, they said in joint statement.

‘We understand that he had been denied bail on several occasions and that concerns had been raised about his treatment while he was imprisoned,’ they added.

They called on the government of Bangladesh to conduct a swift, transparent, and independent inquiry into the full circumstances of Mushtaq Ahmed’s death.

The envoys said they would continue to engage with the government of Bangladesh on wider concerns of their respective governments about the provisions and implementation of the DSA, and compatibility of the law with Bangladesh’s obligations under international human rights laws and standards.

The envoys also expressed their sincere condolences to Mushtaq’s family and friends.

The envoys who signed the statement are: Canadian high commissioner Benoit Préfontaine, Denish ambassador Winnie Estrup Petersen, EU ambassador Rensje Teerink, French ambassador Jean-Marin Schuh, German ambassador Peter Fahrenholtz, Italian ambassador Enrico Nunziata, Dutch ambassador Harry Verweij, Norwegian ambassador Espen Rikter-Svendsen, Spenish ambassador Francisco de Asis Benitez Salas, Swedish ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde, Swiss Ambassador Nathalie Chuard, British high commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson and US ambassador Earl R Miller.

Writer Mushtaq died in Kashimpur High-Security Jail in Gazipur on Thursday night.

It was the first death of a person in prison after being detained under the Digital Security Act.

Mushtaq was denied bail six times, as police pressed a charge sheet in a Dhaka court against him, cartoonist Ahmed Kishore, and Rashtrachinta Dhaka coordinator Didarul Bhuiyan in a case under the DSA, said Mushtaq’s lawyer Abdullah Al Noman.

He was arrested on May 6, 2020, and later shifted to the high-security jail on August 24, 2020, from the Dhaka Central Jail.

In a case lodged on May 5, 2020, RAB-3 warrant officer Abu Bakar Siddique named 11 people, including Mushtaq and Kishore, and five to six unidentified people on charge of tarnishing the image of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, hurting the spirit of the liberation war and spreading rumours about COVID-19 on social media.

Be aware of these so called progressives. They are the disciples of Indo-Zionist axis.
This is the reality bhai that @Al-zakir and such type of people do not want to understand. They do not understand that these so called progressive started spoiling AL since Pakistan period. However I believe Mujib banned BAL and created BAKSAL in order to counter these progressive and their master India ! .Later Mujib was murdered by them. However I am not supporting BAKSAL but I believe that the intention of Mujib was good , but the time was not the right time to establish BAKSAL!

Mujib could talk but he didn't have academic knowledge of his generation.
@Old School bhai , what if BNP reforms and choose new leadership and keep Zia family out from politics?

Do you not think it will become a stronger political party again?

As far I understand, it's a continuation of Muslim league and anti Awami league people vote them.

And also a third political power maybe introduced through VP Nur and such kinds ?

Family dynasty should be abolished in Bangladesh.

Please right a thoughtful opinion if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Surprisingly, I am not against family dynasty in politics providing they are well qualified. In addition, it takes generations to learn good manners and you can not learn them overnight.
BNP and BAL are both are built on foreign prescriptions. They had their chances to govern where they again and again exposed their Indian subservience. None from those two parties can be trusted again. No, thank you. It is time to create new political platforms.

Noor is genetically engineered by pro-India faction of your military intelligence. He is no different than many of the BAL leaders including Mujib, Tajuddun etc. who were artificially created and promoted during the Pakistan period. Those days , Pakistan military was heavily infiltrated by Indo-Soviet intelligence untill General Zia ul Haq came to clean up a lot and he himself too was killed by those foreign stooges. I could tell you many things about Noor but this is not the right place to do that. Anyway, Noor is a fraud and charlatan.

Okay I understand your point . And is it possible to start a private conversation with you? Or at least wall to wall conversation? I already follow you ,you can write on my wall if you want. Or please start a conversation with me if possible. I would really love to talk to you privately in this matter, but I can't sent private message ( no direct access for me yet ) , I am only allowed to reply it .

I don't have access to private message. Wall is no different than the forum itself. Trust me. People with the background like Noor are not meant to be leaders. In BD , you still need blue blood to become a PM. He will become a domestic opposion leader like ASM Abdur Rab to show that government do let opposition speak. A slave to his masters at best.
