DHAKA — Bangladesh's high court has ordered police to sue 17 professors for allegedly distorting the country's liberation war history and maligning its founding leader in a school textbook, lawyers said Wednesday.

In a deepening row over who called Bangladeshi people to launch armed resistance against Pakistan in 1971, the court also summoned 30 other professors who wrote or edited the textbook, a top state prosecutor said.

"It ruled on Tuesday that the book distorted liberation war history as it dropped the name of father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the proclaimer of independence," additional attorney general M.K. Rahman told AFP.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is fondly known as Bangabandhu (friend of Bengal) was Bangladesh's first president and led the the country to independence from Pakistan after a bloody nine-month war in 1971.

"The textbook wrongly said Major Ziaur Rahman was the proclaimer of our independence. It also dropped Bangabandhu from Sheikh Mujibur's name," he said.

Bangladesh's independence remains a bitter political issue as Ziaur Rahman's widow is now leader of the opposition, while Sheikh Mujibur's eldest daughter is the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

An angry, decades-long debate about who actually called for the armed resistance still divides national politics in Bangladesh.

The book on civics was originally written in 2000 with "correct information, but an edited version made the distortion in 2009" when Hasina stormed back to power, said lawyer Belal Hossain, who represented the petitioners.

The court in January ordered seizure of millions of copies of the textbook in the same dispute.

Good Work by Supreme Court

Now India should be added for Independence above than anybody!

Great, there goes freedom of speech

Now there's a holiday to celebrate Hasina's dad's birthday.

All hail to our new god, Sheikh Mujib....

And by the way, it was Zia who declared Bangladesh's independence. And Mujib of-course did have a role in its independence.

Until Awami League is in politics it will not allow anyone to forget the contributions of Ziaur Rahman. By very stupid in nature, AL will do something that will bring Zia at the forefront.

Bangabandhu cannot be a part of any one's name. It is not a family name in BD. Why should it be compulsory to utter those difficult to say word before saying Sheikh Mujibur Rahman? However, I will be happy to call him Bharatbandhu instead. He was a friend of Bharat. So, it will not arouse any controversy.

Guys... Guys... Guys.... Just chill!!!

You can declare Indira Gandhi as a proclaimer of BD independence and be done with it :partay:

Sheikh Mujibur Rehman is considered the Founding Father of BD. Respect him. Just because he happens to be the father of some lame PM doesn't give a reason to belittle his sacrifice for the nation.

Most politician in this country are CHAMAR. Also most of their followers are a little degree lower than them as well. They say whatever comes out of their mouth to denigrated opponent. Look where is Dr. Yunus now. They even made him a villain.

Its almost like every BD hates Hasina and that other women. Why don't the youth come up with some new political party with some fresh ideas ? Obviously they will be beaten but NO PAIN NO GAIN !!

It seems Indians are more in love with Musjib/la-hasina/Al than us. Why don't you call him your father and hang his poster on wall instead of giving us advice. Bhartis should not be allow to comment on Bangladeshis internal matter.

Bloody Al gonna get it. If everything goes according to plan then you will have to host some AL inluding La-Hasina just about 1.5 years. So be happy, your father's daughter is coming to her soul land.

RAW will make sure their budget is used properly to help La Hasina make her grip strong on BD politics. Also teach some manners to some indisciplined lot who trolls in pdf. :D
