When Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who also is the daughter of late President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been repeatedly expressing her government's determination in bringing back the absconding killers of her father, Bangladesh Police, which is under the command of minister Advocate Shahara Khatun and state minister Advocate Shamsul Hoque Tuku has surprisingly expressed direct opposition to the agenda of the ruling coalition government of Bangladesh Awami Leage and leftist-Islamist parties by removing the information and photographs of the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Similarly all other law enforcing agencies in Bangladesh, including Rapid Action Battalion and Dhaka Metropolitan Police also did the same thing and removed all such contents from their respective sites.
On August 15, during the 27th death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated at his residence in Dhaka along with other members of his family, which included his wife, three sons, two daughter-in-laws and other members of the domestic help, general secretary of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Syed Ashraful Islam said that they know the place where the six of the 12 convicted killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were staying.
"We will bring back the killers to the country within shortest possible time" he said.
Law enforcement agencies and the authorities concerned claimed that the killers were hiding in unidentified locations around the world. SHMB Noor Chowdhury, the man who had shot Bangabandhu at point-blank range on August 15, 1975, lives in Canada, while Rashed Chowdhury is in the US. Another two of the fugitive convicts, dismissed army captains Abdul Majed and Risaldar Moslehuddin, were believed to be hiding somewhere in India. The other fugitives, sacked lieutenant colonels Khondokar Abdur Rashid and Shariful Haque Dalim, were hiding in unidentified locations, possibly in Pakistan. It may be mentioned here that, a court in Dhaka through judgement on November 8, 1998, awarded death penalty to 15 former army officers, for assassinating Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family members, at his home, in a coup on August 15, 1975.
Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed said legal, and diplomatic efforts are on to bring back the six out of 12 convicted killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"We know the current locations of two of the absconding Bangabandhu Murder Trial convicts - former lieutenant colonel SHMB Noor Chowdhury is staying in Canada and Lt Col Rashed Chowdhury in the United States".
He added, "We are trying our best to bring the two back home" as legal initiatives were launched appointing lawyers alongside diplomatic efforts for their extradition from the Canada and the United States."
Home ministry officials last year said they were almost confirmed that two of the fugitive convicts were hiding in India while Dhaka repeatedly sought Indian assistance to track former army Captain Abdul Majed and former Risaldar Moslehuddin.
The then Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram during a Dhaka visit last year said "it's possible that they could be in India" and New Delhi would extend its hands to track down two convicted killers.
"I have assured my counterpart that no effort and resources will be spared to apprehend and hand them over to Bangladesh," the Indian Home Minister told newsmen after a meeting with Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun.
Information on the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were put on official websites of Bangladesh police, Rapid Action Battalion and Dhaka Metropolitan Police since 1996 when Bangladesh Awami League first came in power under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. The contents were removed from the websites by the consecutive government of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Later, when military backed interim government took over power on January 11, 2007 under the leadership of General [Retired] Moeen U Ahmed, they even started making contacts with the absconding killers as well as those, who were inside prison in Dhaka awaiting death penalty and it was rumored that the military backed interim government of General Moeen were even attempting of giving patronization to the killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in returning to Bangladesh. But such moves were seriously opposed by a number of influential figures in Bangladesh Army, including Brigadier General ATM Amin, Brigadier General Chowdhury Fazlul Bari etc, who told General Moeen that, giving any patronization to the killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would put the label of abettors of killers on the backed interim government. It is also learnt that, General Moeen U Ahmed even secretly sent his personal "envoy" to some of the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for seeking their support, if Moeen would exclude both Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia from politics. But his frantic bids did not work, due to serious opposition both inside Bangladesh Army as well as the backed interim government.
When contacted, a senior official of Bangladesh Police, commenting on the removal of the photographs and other details of the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said, "We don't know why and how such contents were removed. But definitely this matter was brought into the attention of Advocate Shahara Khatun and Advocate Shamsul Hoque Tuku, and none of them ever expressed any dissatisfaction or concern on such removal, which might have been signalled to the people concerned in police department, as a sign of silent approval."
In reply to a question, if the minister or the state minister ever gave any instruction for removing contents related to the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the official said, both the minister and the state minister are extremely careful on this particular issue and it is unlikely that both are unaware of such removal of contents from the websites of Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion and Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Seeking anonymity, another source told Weekly Blitz that, the entire police department is visibly fed up with Bangladesh Awami League for turning the forces into mere party cadres, by placing pro-Awami League figures into important positions in police and intelligence services. It said, the tenure of Bangladesh Awami League led coalitions government is at the last tale and it has become clear that the ruling coalition will not be able in getting even a part of the required seats, which would enable them in forming the next government.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry starts anti-Yunus campaign:
While contents on the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are removed from the websites of Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh has also been greatly ignoring the entire issue, though foreign minister Dr. Dipu Moni had made numerous statements on bringing back the absconding killers to Bangladesh.
The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry tried to justify the case of bringing back the absconding killers of Sheikh Mujib as "affairs of the Home Ministry", while they have started anti-Yunus propaganda through the official website of Bangladesh Foreign Ministry.
In the website, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a document titled "Facts Relating to Professor Muhammad Yunus's Legal Challenge to Continue as Managing Director of Grameen Bank and the Report of the Multi-Disciplinary Review Committee on Grameen Bank", Bangladesh foreign ministry said, "The Grameen Bank and Professor Muhammad Yunus have featured in the international and national media quite extensively over the past one year. The reports mostly portrayed a "conflict" between the Bangladesh Government and the Managing Director of Grameen Bank at the time, namely, Professor Muhammad Yunus. The Government feels it necessary to clear the air, especially in view of the misperception that these reports may have generated."
Replying to a question of Dr. Dipu Moni's decision of placing materials against Dr. Yunus on the official website of Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, a source said, "This truly is a nasty attitude and will not be appreciated by the international community. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry has put it's own image into dock by publishing anti-Yunus materials on their website, which will ultimately turn boomerang for the ruling coalition government and its elites.
"Dr. Yunus is no small figure in today's world. He enjoys high esteem and reputed in the eyes of thousands of influential figures in different countries in the world, and none will feel delighted in seeing their friend being humiliated by the Bangladeshi Government as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The entire chronology of the recent happenings inside Bangladesh Home Ministry as well as Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, it is not difficult to assess that the civil administration is gradually slipping onto the opposition of the ruling party.
