Bangladesh on track to become a top 30 economy: US

.
I don't understand the argument of people who say , Per capita is more important .

01 Cost of living matters . Earning 30,000 INR in Jammu is equal to earning 75,000 INR in Mumbai . But you can't compare the two since cost of living in Jammu is low and in Mumbai is high .

02 Common man doesn't purchase in dollars . So per capita is only a rhetoric , when it comes to common man .

03 Life style . A person who earns 30,000 but is a spendthrift will soon be in trouble .

Why do we South Asians try to ape West in every thing :D

And whole economy is nothing to be proud of, cause it's just matter of the number of population.
Would you say that bangladesh has better economy than denmark? no sense
Indeed. Right now Bangladeshi economy is not much to talk about.

But their growth rate is steady and their investments in their economy are steady. As their overall economy increases, so will their per capita income. Their population growth rate is more or less steady.

My family earns 25,000 USD a year ( 4 members ) . I am a middle class in India .
My Friend in USA told me that my family will be poor with that amount in USA .

I have a broken heart when I saw @alaungphaya and the other Burmese are not participating in the discussion. Did they have a heart attack that with all their fancy FDI their country cannot come near BD in terms of economic growth at least for the next hundred years.?

I think the countries in South Asia should wait for time to come before starting celebrations, some county will be a super power in 2020, some will become asian tiger, some will be 30th economy. I will be the king of entire world in 2045...lets start the celebrations, shall we

Good work Bangladesh. I have always thought that Bengalis have a more progressive outlook to the world than west Pakistanis. Keep up the good work and keep expanding economically.
It will not be surprised if Bangladesh surpass Pakistan economically in 2020.

It is not hedging that is the issue only.

Textiles cannot provide the well-paid jobs needed to move the economy to middle-income stage. It is a low-productivity industry so to speak.
Petro-chemical, chemical and non-chemical industries shall have to be built that will provide good paying jobs because these industries will produce many higher value-added goods that the textile sector cannot. Higher value means higher earning that will result in higher wages and benefits.

Are you sure its that low? What is your source for this? This is a 12 hour shift a day?

Dont worry about the source as life is too short - i read an article a few months ago on wages in the BD garments sector:-)

This would be for 10 hours a day, 6 days a week and so 60 hours in total per week.

Although the wages do seem low we need to take into account the rapid wage inflation that is happening in BD.
Please see below:

Minimum Wage for Garments workers:

2006 - 1662 taka
2010 - 3000 taka
2013 - 5300 taka

The minimum wage has risen by 218% between
2006 and 2013

BD inflation - start off with 100 for 2006 for simplicity

2006 = 100
2010 = 134
2013 = 170

In the same time period, inflation has gone up
only 70% so you can see the massive rise in real
take home pay.

The government is following a very clever policy
to raise the living standards of the garment workers
while not harming this most critical industry.

Just last year, the BD government has doubled the salary of all government
employees which is far more than what would be eaten by inflation.

I am pleasantly surprised to see Bangladeshi Taka is more valuable than Pakistani rupee in international currency market. Was is it always like that or a recent happening?
