Bangladesh Navy got new warship ‘Surma’ - Made in Bangladesh.

Patrol Craft ‘Shurma’, the second such sea-vessel manufactured by Khulna Shipyard with the technical assistance from China is officially transferred to Bangladesh Navy at a ceremony organised at the Khulna Shipyard.

The 50.4-metre long, 7.5-metre wide and 4.1-metre tall warship can travel up to 23 nautical miles per hour.The ship, armed with two 37 millimetre cannons and two 20 millimetre anti-aircraft guns and can continuously sail for seven days.

Warship ‘Shurma’ is the second vessel to have been handed over to the Navy after construction of a total of five warships began on March, 2011.Officials said building of a patrol craft locally costs Tk 540 million as opposed to its import cost of Tk 1 billion.

Once a "White Elephant" ,Khulna Shipyard a commercial enterprise of Bangladesh Navy has been developed into a leading ship building and repair organization over the past years.

BD has traditionally spent most of it's scarce military budget on the army for obvious reasons. Both the airforce and navy had to make do with very little.

This decade is seeing a major focus on the Navy with around a dozen frigates, hopefully some in the next 5 years with medium-range VLS SAMs, in total by 2020. We will also be seeing the first submarines inducted into the BN soon as well. The BD Navy is being prepared to be able to operate in all areas of the Bay of Bengal and even further afield if necessary.

As BD gets more experience, we may see by the latter part of the decade frigates being constructed but with the engines and most of the electronics and weapons having to be imported - probably from China.

Yup, IMO naval strength is the key because of your maritime disputes with Myanmar, maybe India too . Navy will help you secure those offshore oil reserves.
