To strengthen bilateral trade and economic ties, an agreement was signed between Bangladesh and Algeria in 1973. Now, both the countries have opportunities to increase trading, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, according to a press release.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday at his official residence in the capital while attending a virtual meeting with Rabah Larbi, Algerian ambassador to Dhaka.

The commerce minister said, "Algeria is a friend of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is keen to increase trade and economic cooperation with Algeria."

As there are opportunities to increase trade between the countries, any aspect of the 1973 agreement will accordingly be revised if it seems necessary, said Tipu Munshi.

He said, "Bangladesh is doing better in terms of export. It is the second largest exporter of readymade garments in the world. Algeria has a huge demand for Bangladeshi-made garments, jute and leather products, tobacco and furniture," according to the statement.

Bangladesh wants to increase its exports to Algeria and frequent visits of both the countries' businessmen can pave the way, said the minister.

If the Covid-19 situation improves, necessary steps will be taken through direct talks between the two countries, he added.

Ambassador Rabah Larbi said that Algeria was interested in increasing trade with Bangladesh.

At present, the trade volume between the two countries is very low. Algeria is ready to sign Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Bangladesh, Rabah Larbi said.

"There is a huge demand for several Bangladeshi products in Algeria. So, Algeria wants to take the initiative and perform necessary tasks through discussions with the businessmen from both countries," he said.

It is mentionable that in the last financial year, Bangladeshi goods worth $5.90 million were exported to Algeria, and goods worth $90.79 million were imported from the country.

The commerce minister also invited his Algerian counterpart to visit Bangladesh, added the press release.

Well exports IMHO need to go where there are prospects, whether in Asia (specifically China, now that we have the zero duty benefit) and also to South America, where we have a huge potential that is being filled by much higher priced rivals. MENA region such as Algeria is good, but population-wise South America as a future market outshines them by far. High population markets are fertile grounds for basic products.

Our products are mostly not luxury products, except some of the electronics (Aircons, TVs, Refrigerators, Cellphones) being made and exported now. Talking specifically about basic kitchen and household electrics and implements (pots, pans, toasters, rice cookers, irons, pressure cookers) that the local market is awash in. Not even talking about apparel.

In these basic export products, we have a significant price and quality advantage over that of many large countries (even over countries like Thailand), even without significant local value addition. The only value addition that matters is cheap labor being added locally and potentially, the massive economies of scale.

This has already been proven by exports of non-apparel items to say, Nepal and the Gulf states. Although small so far, that has portents of very large potential in the future.

We should seek more trade with Brazil, FTA maybe.

Exactly, Brazil is the largest and hugely populated country in South America with many types of markets for our products, both basic and luxury items. Then, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Central American states are fertile grounds too. Especially Argentina, even with their currently less than spectacular economy - for basic products.

Indian and Chinese items have huge markets in South America, and they all started with Brazil. Brazil can also be a source for many inputs (minerals) as well as costly manufactured items. Embraer comes to mind, they came up here last year to market their E2 jet I believe.

You know the NAM movement had this slogan about South-South cooperation, it makes more and more sense everyday. These NAM guys were onto something.

We exported about 5 million dollars worth of Jute Yarn only, and they exported dried apricots and dates (khajur) there is lots more potential.

This is, as of 2017...

DZA means Democratic ZamaHuriyat of Algeria I believe. They are a strong country in North Africa next to Morocco, and a former French Colony, as are others in North Africa.

Look at what we exported to Brazil and imported from them.
