Bangladesh in 34-state Islamic military alliance

Bangladesh has joined a Saudi Arabia-based 34-state Islamic military coalition to combat terrorism, according to a joint statement published on state news agency SPA.

"The countries here mentioned have decided on the formation of a military alliance led by Saudi Arabia to fight terrorism, with a joint operations center based in Riyadh to coordinate and support military operations," the statement said today.

A long list of Arab countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, together with Islamic countries Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan and Gulf Arab and African states were mentioned.

The announcement cited "a duty to protect the Islamic nation from the evils of all terrorist groups and organizations whatever their sect and name which wreak death and corruption on earth and aim to terrorize the innocent."

Shi'ite Muslim Iran, Sunni Saudi Arabia's arch rival for influence in the Arab world, was absent from the states named as participants, as proxy conflicts between the two regional powers rage from Syria to Yemen.

The United States has been increasingly outspoken about its view that Gulf Arab states should do more to aid the military campaign against the Islamic State militant group based in Iraq and Syria.

In a rare press conference, 30-year-old deputy crown prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman told reporters on Tuesday that the campaign would "coordinate" efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan, but offered few concrete indications of how military efforts might proceed.

"There will be international coordination with major powers and international organizations ... in terms of operations in Syria and Iraq. We can't undertake these operations without coordinating with legitimacy in this place and the international community," bin Salman said without elaborating.

Asked if the new alliance would focus just on Islamic State, bin Salman said it would confront not only that group but "any terrorist organization that appears in front of us."

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab neighbors have been locked in nine months of warfare with Iran-allied rebels in neighboring Yemen, launching hundreds of air strikes there.

Especially after a rash of attacks on Western targets claimed by Islamic State in recent months, the United States has increasingly said it thinks that firepower would better be used against IS.

As a ceasefire is set to take hold in Yemen on Tuesday alongside United Nations-backed peace talks, Riyadh's announcement may signal a desire to shift its attention back toward the conflicts north of its borders.

Islamic State has pledged to overthrow the monarchies of the Gulf and have mounted a series of attacks on Shi'ite Muslim mosques and security forces in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The list of 34 members: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Gabon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinians, Qatar, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen, BBC Online adds.

Quoting from the article:

At a rare news conference, Saudi Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman said the new Islamic military coalition will develop mechanisms for working with other countries and international bodies to support counterterrorism efforts.

What does that mean? Sharing intelligence, monitoring and blocking funding, interdiction and repatriation are laudable goals for any anti-terror alliance. But a NATO-style defense pact against terrorism will not work. The Saudis themselves are the fountainhead of most Salafi/Wahhabi terrorism in the world. To expect them to do something positive in this area would be like expecting the fox to guard the chicken coop.

This is actually a good development whatever does it mean. If Saudis ditch BNP JI and come close to BAL that is actually good news for BD. BAL wont work anything by their dictation rather it will help to eradicate BD terrorists and cut their overseas funding.

This has to be the most ironical, most badly camouflaged and the most comical news to have come out in 2015.

So you are saying with a straight face that the purpose of this military alliance headquartered in Riyadh is to fight salafist terrorism?

.
If the Pakistanis, who talk so much about Ummah , don't want to die fighting Saudi Wars, why are the Bangladeshis so willing
1. This is a confusing Coalition, don't know full agenda
2. The decision is taken solely by Government, we have no idea until now

No Saudis dont have much interest to spread salafism in BD rather Bangladeshi salafists are more eager to spread salafism in BD. There is a difference. Saudis can help them feeling pity on them.

Saudis want Turkey and Pakistani military might in their sphere. Rest are show off for said Islamic brotherhood. BD can maybe provide manpower. Joining this alliance we can actively eradicate terrorism in BD more than ever downing moral of our jihadis. Win win situation.

This development is interesting and I will go ahead and make a prediction. It would FAIL to achieve it's stated objectives.

I will be happy if I am wrong though :)

Yeah when Nato & a country whose defence budget is close to $700 B couldn't do shit. I fear this new Teen Titan gang couldn't do it either.

IMO you have terribly failed to read the saudi motivation. Since their meeting with Roosevelt, Saudis, with their petro dollars, and control over the holy mosques have tried to control the islamic world. Like roosevelt, they think if you want to dominate, you must shape it. Their active spread of wahhabism all over the world is NOT an accident or a misplaced idea of piety. If you think they do not look at the wahhabis in BD as their agents of influence then you are totally wrong.

This is just using the pretext pf terrorism (ironically spread by saudi) to militarise their influence over islamic world. To think they are going to help BD reverse wahhabism is naive. If anything this alliance will be used to spread wahhabism. Think about it, they will have considerable influence (if they succeed btw) on the wahhabis and those fighting the wahhabis. That means the sauds NEVER lose.

@Hyperion would love to hear your take.

It really depends on the intent of winning the war. Now winning has a lot of flexible interpretations in different military circles. There lies the problem.

This intent is what is more important than any amount of money you pump in !

How exactly is that gonna happen ? (in terms of protocol)

Lots of people are sold on this idea but no one wants to answer the obvious problem

Much like the investment banks pre 2008 melt down

Is this like NATO where coalition comes for help in case of war?
