Bangladesh eyes Africa as Middle-East job markets shrink

It mentioned on agricultural sector, specially contract farming where Bangladeshis will lease land in Africa and employ Bangladeshis for farming.

“The basic idea of the proposal was to take lease of vast tracts of African farmlands, which has been unused due to labour shortage, and then employ Bangladeshi farmers there.

"The African governments concerned had shown interest in providing lands to the Bangladeshis through contract farming," Golam Masih, Bangladesh's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, who had forwarded the proposal, told the FE over phone on Tuesday.

"They had also agreed to provide 10-year visa to the Bangladeshi workers and their family members, who would be employed in those countries," he noted.”

You'd think he already would've read the OP and article before commenting...

That is dead giveaway to this type of cloud nine report. Many African countries looking for investors who can take large tract of land to grow crops. This has been going on since early 2005. There are few Bangladeshi investor farming in some African countries already. But that type of farming is not for any large scale employment or will provide good enough salary.

Another point, Awami League cheer leaders, like yourself, claim - with extraordinary development, Awami League already taken Bangladesh per capital income to the roof. Can you prove that farm worker income in Africa is significantly greater than than Awami league claimed per capital income in Bangladesh? Also, if Bangladesh is so developed by Awami league why people need to go to Africa for agri farm jobs?

Please get more details before passing opinion. Bangladesh Government is encouraging Bangladeshi businessman to purchase land in Africa and recruit Bangladeshis for agricultural purpose!

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thedailystar.net/frontpage/news/post-covid-19-labour-market-bangladesh-eyes-africa-1914029?amp

"We are not saying that the African governments will recruit our people. What we are saying is that African countries have huge land where our people to go for contract farming and recruit workers from Bangladesh," he said.

The foreign minister said that farming sector is going to be very important in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

He specifically mentioned the names of Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda and The Gambia where huge opportunities lye for investment in the agriculture sector.
There was a time when BD govt used to say of buying land for agriculture in Burma. Now, we have Rohingya problem. The GoB is talking this now for an unknown Africa when the same govt claims of being self-sufficient in agri products. So, what is this big talking?

I think this is a non-starter project. Only people who are real farmers can tilt and grow foods. It is not that easy that Basundhara Chairman buys land and we all go there to farm. Very absurd thinking without a base. Very typical of Bangladesh people without a mind to think in the proper perspective.
After all, BD is run by people with only a minimal peasant background.

I do not believe, any African govt will allow lands to sell to foreigners. African land is not suitable also for paddy growing and people from Africa in Japan do not eat rice. but eat something that looks like a big potato equal to 200 BD potatoes in volume they grow in their lands. The land there is not flat, but hilly.

I again say, the GoB tries hard to industrialize the country and make its people wealthy. I ask our benevolent PDF members to negate my view with a proper argument.

Why you always need to mix one thing to another? Is contract farming something a new concept? From South America to Africa many countries are leasing land for farming. You have the option to employ local people for farming or bring your own agro labor. Government of Bangladesh is exactly looking for that. Plus food not necessarily need to be sent back to Bangladesh. It can be sold to the local market or exported to other destinations as well. It is a big opportunity to earn extra revenue and employ labors at the same time. Please stop whining all the time if you can not wish well.

Don't oppose this highly intelligent Japanese national, else he will childishly call your mother a wh0re and talk about your penis among a host of other things.

I'm facing a litany of abuse just for opposing and exposing him and his hypocrisy.

But, I thought you are very close to him through BAL connections if not a half brother. I asked only a simple question about his identity and you bullied me in response. However, you claim you read Bangla news papers. Did I tell you ever that you need my permission to start a thread?

Bloody Hodol Kutkut, you are suffering from inferiority complex, claiming yourself being an intellectual who is respected by BD people in Dhaka. Read your post where you claimed this. That is why you reacted in a mean way to show you have big dick like Shahed.

Learn to behave in an international forum. To pick up fight is very common genetic trend in many BD people, especially those ugly Hodol Kultkut.

Are you aware of specific opportunity? If so, lets hear it. Report did not mention any specifics.

I am merely saying that we should seek to take advantage of any and all opportunities irrespective of location.

So, when the project will start? Is it not just another BAL propaganda after space mission, jet plane project and hundred others? This so-called African project is just another ploy to hoodwink our people.

A few days later after the euphoria is gone everyone will pretend to forget this thing and the BAL govt will come out with some other new fictions. This has been going on for many years. Read over the threads to know about all these fictions in the last few years.

By the way, since when G to G meetings have completed with the participation of relevant countries' ministers and what agreements have been reached and how many million acres of land the African countries will sell to BD?

Please do not forget to give us the feed back.

Africa is certainly not a place of opportunities. I do not know how much does it cost for a round trip ticket Dhaka-African countries, but I traveled a total of 8 times from Tokyo via Alaska-London or Amsterdam or Zurich or Frankfurt to Lagos or Libya. Each round trip costed about $3,000. My employer paid it.

Dhaka to African countries' present route may be Dhaka-Dubai-Rome- Africa. I am surprised to see how many of you guys claim successful agro business in such far away countries where it will take three days to go. Before you talk/start that low value business, better you ask BIMAN to open a new route Dhaka-Dubai-Many African countries, the fare of which should be $300 round trip. Even then, there will be no taker. I hope, the GoB or Hasina Bibi will pay the money.

By the way, when the respective African govts accepted BD proposals and when BD proposed this lucrative agro business that adds lowest value than even our textiles? Is there any such backward news?

If you don’t know about anything please don’t comment. There is direct flight to most major African cities from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha. Plus before talking about $300 round ticket is it even possible with Delhi? Why you need to whining and post irrelevant things all the time. Africa has lots of opportunities and it is up to the countries whether they can take it or not.

OK, pay $3000 per trip and it will be certainly a lucrative investment. But, why so many forward forecast when even not a single meeting has taken place in Dhaka or in any African Capital between BD and others. If this is true, then it is another fake p;roject without essence. Do you guys think just a newspaper proposal will allow BD to get million acre lands in Africa? Please, be practical. It is just another news to please BD members in the PDF.

"By the way, Fufu is very much a staple food common in many West African countries. It is prepared by mixing and pounding separate equal portions of cassava and green plantain flour thoroughly with water. Other flours can take the place of cassava flour, such as semolina, maize flour or mashed plantains".

So, what foods the benevolent GoB wants to produce there? Certainly, it is not rice. It may not be produced there.

Getting land depends all on the investor not Bangladeshi government. After all it is him who will invest. But as the article indicated all the labors and their families can get a 10 year work visa to stay in the country where investment is made.

By the way Dhaka to Lagos round trip is around $1500 using Emirates not $3000.

Only major concern you can raise with this project is whether this investment opportunity will be used by certain businessman to do money laundering.
