Bangladesh court bans use of Indian songs as ringtones: Report

A Bangladeshi high court has issued a ruling that bans the use of songs from Indian movies and movies of sub-continental decent as ringtones, and caller tunes on mobile phones. This was originally reported by BDNews24.com , which is a Bangladesh based news portal.

Essentially, mobile phone operators have been told not use these songs as value added services (VAS). Reportedly, a writ petition from the President of the Music Industry Owners Association, Arifur Rahman and General Secretary, SK Shahed Ali precipitated the court to issue the order.

The report also claims that the court sought answers from the country's secretaries of culture, information, home and law ministries. In addition, the Bangladesh Telecom regulatory commission is also needed to respond to the court. All parties have to reply within four weeks.

Essentially, this is a ban on the import of Indian content. "Import policy bars the import of Indian or sub-continental films to Bangladesh. That is why songs of those (films) can't be used as welcome tune or ringtone," said Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury, who is the lawyer representing Arifur Rahman and SK Shaded Ali.

Bangladesh had previously banned the import of Indian films in a bid to boost its local film industry. However, the ban was revoked in 2013 as the country changed its import policy. As a part of its new import policy films from South Asian Free Trade members can be imported, however, this ruling is not without caveats.

The import policy dictates that the number of films imported should not exceed the number of films exported from Bangladesh.

The ban is imposed on buying ringtones for your mobile phones through things like SMS, to help the local music artists. You can download it from the net and use it as your ringtone though. Some people like lesser crap.

Doesn't make sense, you are saying is since Tagore was Bengali its ok to keep the national anthem (although he was born in Kolkata and not in any part today of Bangladesh). Well then why your court ban Indian songs since mostly Bangladeshis listen Bengali songs from India.

But later Bengal was divided. He opted for Indian citizenship. East Bengal first with Pakistan and later by on its own Bangladesh. Doesnt make him less Bangladeshi as he was our countrymen too. Before 1947 fellow British Indian were our countrymen. And from 47-71 west Pakistanis were our countrymen. Even Jinnah, Bhutto, Gandhi was Bangladeshi.
So as we are no longer part of India we make rules for ourselves. People listen these personally but some mobile operators are illegally taking money from people by giving service of Indian music
