Mahmuda Aktar, 33, was attacked as she was taking her son to a school bus stop near her home in the city of Chittagong.
"She was stabbed first. Then they shot her in the head three times," a spokesman said.

Her husband, police superintendent Babul Aktar, "played a key role in apprehending Islamists," said interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan.
"They might have killed his wife because they failed to get him."

Mr Aktar had recently been posted to police headquarters in the capital, Dhaka, and had been successful capturing militants from Bangladesh's Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen network.
The group was founded in 1998 and is conducting a terrorist campaign to replace the government with one based on Islamic Sharia.
Mr Aktar's team was known for arresting one of the group's leaders, who was later killed in a grenade blast during a police raid last year.
In a separate attack on Sunday, a Christian was hacked to death after attending prayers near a church in northwest Bangladesh in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

Police said unidentified attackers murdered the 65-year-old in the village of Bonpara, home to one of the country's oldest Christian communities.
"Sunil Gomes was hacked to death at his grocery store just near a church at Bonpara village," a police spokesman said.
Despite the claim of responsibility, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam has said the group was trying to ride a wave of religious radicalisation by falsely claiming killings and there was enough evidence implicating domestic militant groups.
Bangladesh has witnessed a spate of murders by suspected Islamist militants amid increasing concern about the safety of minorities and free speech in the Muslim-majority country.
