DHAKA: Bangladesh’s most prestigious university has suspended a professor for writing a column critical of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father, as the ruling party cracks down on dissent in a tense election year.

Morshed Hasan Khan was “suspended until further notice” from Dhaka University, its vice-chancellor said Tuesday, after the student wing of the Awami League staged angry rallies on campus.

University head Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman said Khan defamed Bangladesh’s first post-independence president and Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in the controversial article published in a Bengali daily.

The professor of marketing was also accused of “distorting the history” of Bangladesh’s war of independence in 1971, the legacy of which remains contentious today.

Dhaka University is regarded as a stronghold of liberalism and secularism in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, which has been ruled by Hasina’s Awami League for more than nine years.

Hasina jailed her political rival, Khaleda Zia, in February for corruption in a move seen by critics as an attempt to remove opposition ahead of a general election slated for December.

The jail sentence handed to Zia, a two-time former premier and erstwhile ally of Hasina, sparked angry clashes between police and supporters from her Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Rights groups have accused Hasina’s government of exploiting a controversial law to curb dissent and limit freedom of expression in the country of 160 million.

In his column, Khan said it was military strongman and opposition hero Ziaur Rahman — not Hasina’s father — who declared Bangladesh’s independence, a hugely provocative assertion, at the start of the war in 1971.

Khan also suggested most of the Awami League’s leadership, including Hasina’s father, fled Bangladesh when the war broke out.

Student supporters of the Awami League stormed Dhaka University’s campus and declared Khan was no longer welcome after the piece attracted a firestorm of publicity.

The professor has since expressed regret, posting an apology on his Facebook page.

Teachers have been punished in the past for stances critical of Hasina’s father.

In August last year 13 high school teachers were detained and remanded in custody ahead of a trial after being accused of sedition for remarks about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Last week, a report by Germany think tank Bertelsmann Foundation listed Bangladesh as a new autocracy. The ruling party has rejected the assertion.

I feel for him.

There is no freedom of expression in BD, and the media is controlled extremely.

.
His mistake was he said that ziaur rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh after Mujib was arrested.

So now this professor is suspended. This is Awami League govt and present days picture of Bangladesh .
Off topic :
And some so called BD well wisher say that why we can't come to Street.
Why even common folks will risk their life ? Only to make way for another robber party BNP?
No Bangladesh is fine now guys, if you are ready to believe what Awami League want you to believe.
And I have no problem with this, since both political parties are robber.

I would like to read the article by Morshad Hasan Khan so see if his criticism warrants his suspension.

Mate if you refuse Mujib as bangabandhu ( friend of bengal) or father of bengal nation ,even if you question about 3 millions of genocide hoax, then it's high possibility that you will be in jail. This guy only said, "ziaur rahman declared independence and that time Mujib was already arrested, and in 1971 war most of awami league leaders fled to India"
,so that's his crime , and he is suspended from his job.
This is the bitter reality of Bangladesh now.

What he did is a major NO.

Political parties in Bangladesh are only effective when they can own the streets to paralyze the life of general population. Only AL is strong at that level as they can unleash their muscle Chatro League.

BNP never had it even when they were in power.

That's a new low for a democratic despot!

- It is absolutely true that the then Major Ziaur Rahman of PA (an unknown personality at that time) proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh on March 27, 1971 radio broadcast from Kalurghat Radio Center.
- However, he declared it on behalf of our great leader Shaikh Mujibur Rahman.
- Mujib did not make an outright declaration of independence on his March 7 speech. He was not for it but wanted a Confederation type of Pakistan.
-His March 7 speech ended with "Joy Bangla, Joy Pakistan". But, the latter BAL stupids edited the part "Joy Pakistan" from the tape.
- Many of the BAL leadership insisted him to declare formal independence on March 7, which he did not. He did not declare, "I, Mujibur Rahman, leader of the elected MLAs in the East, hereby proclaim the independence of Bangladesh". He uttered things like, "Ebarer Sangram swadhinotar Sangram", Ebarer sangram Muktir Sangram". Both the terms are vague and fall short of a formal declaration.

Talking about history, the Professor is absolutely correct. However, the Liberation War was not done in the name of Major Ziaur Rahman of Pakistan Army. It was conducted in the name of Shaikh Mujibur Rahman. He remains our undisputed "Father of the Nation".

But, Zia's declaration had a major impact on the psyche of the population, quick re-organization of the Bengali military people in the PA/EPR/Ansar/Police, getting training and starting the fighting under them.

Most of the Bengali troops in the PA would have been killed without his formal declaration which could have stalled the liberation war. Only after hearing Zia's speech, they left their respective cantonments, re-grouped and started the war. Hasina and BAL people are shallow-minded. They are not willing to give credit to anyone except Mujib although he himself was imprisoned in West Pakistan.

It is not about the common man risking his life for BNP against the abuse of power by Awami League. It is about ppl standing up and fighting for their rights. Freedom of speech should not be suppressed and in a democracy, the ruling party should not be allowed to abuse their power and subdue political opponents.

This sets a dangerous trend. If the ruling party is taking steps in the direction of tyranny...and it feels no push back from the ppl, it will take another...and then another until a time comes when it will become too powerful and it will be too late to stop it then.
These may be small steps now...and u may not feel any effects of it at the moment...but just step back for a moment and look at the bigger picture...look at where that road is headed. Just remember that power corrupts ppl...if the ppl allow such steps by the ruling party, they will continue with this.

I'm not saying that ppl should stand up for BNP...it might not be any better than Awami League...but rather ppl should stand on principles and protect their democracy and their freedom of speech. Jailing a person for saying something against Sheikh Mujib...these are things u see in dictatorships.

@Avicenna ur thoughts on this?

I think ppl are letting Awami League get away with these things bcuz of the economic prosperity that has occurred under their rule. While economic prosperity is good and all, there should still be a push back from the ppl to keep the ruling party in check. If there were mass protests by the ppl in response to this act(and others like this in the past), it would put pressure on the government. Next time they will be more careful and think twice before overstepping their boundaries.

What type of protest r u expecting from general public for what exactly? Why should the people protest? Make it clear so that others understand where u r exactly coming from. BAL as a party is doing a great job in developing Bangladesh and our honourable prime minister sheikh hasina is leading from the front in that regard.

Why should people protest when the good deeds of AL largely outweigh their bad deeds.

Nobody wants to go back to the dark era of Bangladesh where khaleda along with his two criminal sons looted our country as their personal property. Is there any other alternative in Bangladesh?

Absolutely not. AL is by far the best political Perry in Bangladesh whose sole concern is fulfilling the dream of the father of our nation which is a free, fair and prosperous Bangladesh.
