Bangladeshi authorities have blocked almost 20,000 websites as part of an anti-p.ornography "war", a minister said on Tuesday.

Internet providers in the conservative Muslim-majority nation took down p.ornography and gambling websites in the past week under orders from the telecommunications regulator.

"I want to create a safe and secure internet for all Bangladeshis, including children. And this is my war against p.ornography. And this will be a continuous war," Mustafa Jabbar, the posts and telecommunications minister, told the AFP news agency.

Popular social media apps such as TikTok and Bigo - which authorities believe are misused - have also been blocked in the South Asian nation, Jabbar said.

Most of the blocked sites are foreign, but a few local websites and social media platforms have also faced action under the crackdown, he added.

The crackdown was launched after Bangladesh's High Court in November asked the government to block pornography websites and publication of obscene materials in electronic forms for six months.

The court acted after a civil society organisation filed a petition stating that a large number of adult websites contain uncensored and obscene content.

Regular monitoring

On Sunday, police reprimanded a rising actress and told her to remove provocative images from her Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages.

"We are monitoring the local Facebook profiles, YouTube channels and websites, also," Jabbar said.

"A few of them were taken down for having obscene content. We advised a few others not to post anything that goes against our social norms."

Bangladesh, a country of 165 million people, has more than 90 million internet users. P.orn stars regularly top the list of the most searched names.

Emdadul Hoque, general secretary of the internet service providers association, said they have complied with the order, but many users can still access online p.orn by using virtual private networks or mirror websites.

"This is a continuous process and it needs regular monitoring. These websites are very well aware of the regulations and they come up with thousands of mirror sites every week," Hoque told AFP.

I hope dumb BD govt. doesn't think that this @Imran Khan is prime minister of Pakistan :D

Hopefully our Govt, is not so dumb that they will consider Imran khan as prime minister of Pakistan if they consider Imran khan as Pakistan PM than the word he use against our father of nation we would have already invaded Pakistan to catch Imran khan skin him alive .:-)

Because Govt. didn't consider the availability of VPN . we can easily by pass govt ban .
its mean gov failed to ban PDF and other sites . its damn 2019 how can someone ban and then hide it from public .

then why they banned it ? man they are color blind

Two benefits:
1. Many people don't like to use vpn/proxy(like myself). So many of the existing members won't come here.
2. When you search on google about BD, it gives you pdf's link too which brings many new unique visitors. Now, since the pdf is banned, nobody is gonna use proxy/vpn just to read what kinda conversation is going on here.

.
Stupid, Stupid, Stupid Govt. Wtf is wrong with them.

U wanna block **** site ? OK fine.

But why on earth these idiots have banned torrent BD?

Can't even access slither. Io without using proxies. I have to say that Govt is totally losing its marvel now. This stupid it minister should immediately be kicked out of his position.

Nobody likes using the proxies man. It totally ruins the Internet experience.
