Bangladeshi censors have banned a film in which the main villain is shown wearing a jacket associated with the ruling Awami League party, saying it could trigger violence.

The film Ridoy Bhanga Dhew (Heart Breaking Wave), which was shot in Thailand, was refused a screening permit as it "mocks" ruling party officials, the vice-chairman of the Film Censor Board, Surat Kumar Sarker told AFP on Monday.

"We have rejected the film because it clearly violates the country's film censor rules.
It goes against a political philosophy of the country," Sarker said.

The main villain in the film is shown wearing a "Mujib coat" -- a distinctive, black sleeveless jacket named after Bangladesh's founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who wore it when addressing political rallies.

It is usually worn only by Awami League members keen to show their party allegiance.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is Sheikh Rahman's daughter.

"There is no need for the character to wear this dress. It could spark violence," said Akanda Sanawar Morshed, a filmmaker and member of the censor board.

Morshed also noted that a hero in the film was shown wearing a safari suit of the style favoured by members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Hasina's bitter enemy Khaleda Zia.

The film's director Gazi Mazharul Anwar told AFP that, while he was a member of the BNP, he had never set out to mock anyone.

"Politics has nothing to do with the film," he said, adding that he would appeal the ban.

In 2007, Bangladesh's then army-backed government banned a movie after a character -- playing the role of a criminal -- was shown in military fatigues.

What does the dress worn by a villain in a BD film have to do with " Military and World affairs watch - BD defence ?

You may not have noticed there is very little defense discussion in the Bangladesh section. Also things tend to get very serious in the BD board so this is something light hearted and entertaining.

Films are possibly a part of villainy!

More importantly the dress since it is subversive!

And a matter of national security.

A good attempt at justification.

I have noticed the quantum of defence discussion in the BD section . The reason is not hard to find .

The next elections will be held under the ruling party. We can say goodbye to that dream.

Yes. But i feel Bangladeshi electorate is quiet vibrant and there the voters to come on roads for political reasons and hence i feel you guys can play a great role.

The people shall decide, as they do always.
Personally I've never felt that rigging changes the course
as the elected gov usually are the ones who are
popular at a specific timeframe.

election of 90 - Bnp was popular
election of 96- AL was popular
election of 2001- BNP
election of 2008-AL

next one, guess!

As much as some of you may not agree but this
keeps the oven burning and keeps those politicians at check.
Let the time come, the law will change.

Election of 1996 the electorate was coerced into voting AL after several months of continuous hartal and it is doubtful whether the AL would have got a two-thirds majority in 2008 if its had not been for 1/11.

@ Who says AL got 2/3 majority in 2008 general election ? It was basically done by the Moen U Ahmed in order to legalise his misdeeds. But furtunately or unfortunately the vote rigging went beyond control which was not even expected by AL itself !!! After the voting result AL itself was surprized ???????

@ About the election of 1996, that election was also not free and fair ? The civil adminstration under the leadership Mohiuddin rigged the election silently. Moreso, the caretaker govt of that time also favoured AL.

The next elections will be held under the ruling party. We can say goodbye to that dream.

@ Nobody can say what would happen in future ? Even Sk Hasina might be killed/assassinated like Benjir Butto ????????

We got some privilege (but only in BD section)

You do?

Lucky you.

Others don't seem to have been told of their privileges!

You deserve it since you were one nation at one time! ;)

Don't justify with a fevered imagination!
