Bangladesh has asked India to examine the speeches of controversial Mumbai-based preacher Zakir Naik after reports that two of the seven terrorists who hacked to death 20 people at a Dhaka cafe last week were inspired by him.

"Already there are certain complaints from the Maulanas of Bangladesh that his (Naik) teachings are not in line with the Quranic teachings and Hadith," information minister Hasanul Haq Inu said on Wednesday.

"How much Naik's teachings influenced the terrorists, that is to be investigated. We are investigating the whole matter," he said.

Mr Inu said New Delhi has been requested to examine Naik's sermons. "I also request the Indian government and information minister that they also examine the context of Dr Naik's teachings," he added.

One of the Dhaka attackers, suspected to be Rohan Imtiaz - the son of a politician of Bangladesh's ruling Awami League - ran a propaganda on Facebook last year quoting 50-year-old Naik, a doctor and an Islamic televangelist, Bangladeshi newspaper 'Daily Star' reported.

When the report first emerged, the Indian government said: "We don't ban individuals, we ban organisations."

Naik, who heads the Islamic Research Foundation, is banned in the UK and Canada for his hate speeches. He is among 16 banned Islamic scholars in Malaysia.

He is said to be popular in Bangladesh for his sermons on Peace TV, beamed across the sub-continent, even in China, with a 100 million viewership. He is known for outrageous beliefs like homosexuals should be sentenced to death.

He also questioned once whether Osama bin Laden was a terrorist.

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday directed the Mumbai Police to initiate an inquiry into Islamic preacher Zakir Naik 's public documents. Earlier in the day, the Centre had called his speeches 'highly objectionable' and hinted at 'appropriate action' against him.

"The home ministry will study (his speeches). It will take appropriate action after studying them. His speeches, as being reported in the media, are highly objectionable," Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in Delhi.

Naidu's remarks came a day after Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju hinted at action against the preacher after looking into whether Naik through his speeches glorifies terrorist acts by Muslims. Naik, on Wednesday, had asserted that his speech on Islam and terror has been taken out of context and claimed that he had only said Muslims should terrorise anti-social elements.

"I have asked the Mumbai Police Commissioner to conduct a probe (into Naik's speeches) and submit a report," chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Thursday."Everything, including Naik's speeches, his social media accounts, sources of funding (of a foundation run by him in Mumbai) will be scrutinised, he added.

On Thursday, cops were deployed outside the Mumbai office of a foundation run by Naik as a precautionary measure in the wake of the recent developments.

Zakir Naik's 'hate speech' is reported to have inspired one of the five Bangladeshi militants involved in the recent Dhaka carnage.

Bangladeshi newspaper 'Daily Star' had reported that militant Rohan Imtiaz, son of an Awami League leader, ran a propaganda on Facebook last year quoting Naik.

Naik, in his lecture aired on Peace TV, an international Islamic channel, had reportedly "urged all Muslims to be terrorists".

The controversial Islamic orator and founder of Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation is banned in the UK and Canada for his 'hate speech' aimed at other religions. He is among 16 banned Islamic scholars in Malaysia.

He is known in Bangladesh through his Peace TV, although his preachings often demean other religions and even other Muslim sects, the report said.

Union minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju had on Wednesday told reporters in Delhi that, "Zakir Naik's speech is a matter of concern for us. Our agencies are working on this. But as a minister, I will not comment what action will be taken."

& India should address BD's concerns with all positive intent. If there's a need to extradite this individual to BD to face charges, India should do so.

If what he said was a reason for radicalization of those two (and his speeches are provocative and incites radicalization) he should be dealt with.

He was given a free ride by successive friendly govts & liberal media. It's about time India takes notice of this guy's activity & his source of funding. To start with there should be an embargo on his travel & public preaching.

He has scores of followers in the sub continent, there are millions in our neighborhood and in India that idolise him - he is sure shot an inciter and hater and spreads extreme Islam among his followers.

But, it's a sensitive issue and the millions of loonies who follow him will make a martyr out of him if some stern action is taken against him, plus our own sickulars will have a field day.

It's sad that when a known offender cannot be punished because he smartly navigates around the law.

.
Not only he should be banned but govt must order a NIA investigation for his role in various terrorist attack, especially where he is responsible for radicalizing Indian Muslims.

Iski Dukan band karne ka time a gaya. He should open his shop in Syria but not in India.

Political correctness gone mad. If there's someone out there stoking emotions of gullible youngsters & helping in greater radicalization of his followers, he needs to be stopped without any hesitation. Successive govts have been too soft due to perceived threat of backlash. The more you go blind to the reality of the situation, stronger the backlash is. Govt just needs to put politics to one side & do it's duty fair & just to the nation & people at large!

Unless its proven that he has broken the law theres nothing much that can be done. India has many other monsters who are worse than him who are freely roaming. Bangladesh at the best can ban him or take action when he visits there.

That would be a very smart thing to do. Instead of taking him on directly without solid legal front and incite backlash by his followers and libtards alike, extradite him to BD and let them handle him. They have a very valid reason to go after him too!

Will earn instant good will with BD and show other nutbags that India will not tolerate this nonsense!

BD govt has much better record in dealing with radicals of such kind compared to India. If this guy was strutting his stuff in BD, he would have been sent to the gallows by now!
