BAF Has Settled for SU-30

well I am Ph.d scholar, not every one in this forum are Hindus... you should check Op's post.. then you will understand.. instead of being stupid.. check his posts..

As I said the title is misleading..... One can only assume the OP was expressing a personal opinion. As to the trolls they are exclusively Indian.... I also said hindutva as opposed to Hindu.... There is a difference

Hindu or Hindutva whatever it is, am not bringing religion here... you should read OP posts... i pointed out some... well i don't know, why BD need to modernize it's forces being well equipped and most advanced to face vintage WWII era armed forces like India.. India accepted and settled Maritime and border disputes with BD, unlike china doing with it's neighbors in SCS... we accepted verdict regarding Maritime issues and recently Border problem... why on earth India will attack BD???

In this place ppl often lose control of their emotion, don't take it personally.

As to your question as to why BD needs a modern airforce, think on it for a second. We live in a volatile world nothing is ever guaranteed and as such GOB has a responsibility to ensure that BD is able to defend itself should it need to. As the adage goes we must work for peace but be prepared for war.

As to do I see a war between India and Bangladesh in the near future.... No I do not. I also do not foresee a war with Burma.

However at the same time we must have effective deterrence in place because the only thing we can be sure off is that trouble comes when we expect it the least.

Spot on!

Hasina may lick Indian boots but the armed forces are a different matter.

I know what they think like plus its a strategic issue. I have plenty of friends in the armed forces and am in regular contact with quite a few.

Air-force training in India? Not happening...

This is not India and its not Hasina's call anyways...

Nah, our military will not buy even a pin from India - even if they sent Katrina as a bonus.

Well - we don't have confirmed proof yet. That's the bottom line
Well - we don't have confirmed proof yet. That's the bottom line.

But the Forces Goal 2030 which I referred to earlier in the thread - specified a configurable Advanced Jet trainer (AJT) and Air superiority (AS) + ground/maritime strike (GS/MS) platforms which were to be direct follow-ons from the AJT itself. It is almost textbook in its approach.

We now have the choice of the AJT materialized (Yak 130), so it logically follows that whatever the AJT can be configured as (for training) will be the choice for the follow-on AS/GS/MS platforms. This means anything from MiG-29SMT for AS to the Su-30 (or J-11) for GS/MS.

I can hedge my bets on a squadron of the Su-30 at a minimum (unless of course - we have an unlikely collapse of our economy next week/month/year). We need GS/MS capability direly and it is a huge gap in the implementation of our defense doctrine.

According to one report, the MiG-29se version for Bangladesh were to be upgarded to SMT standard and I recall seeing some images of BAF Mig 29's with the SMT hump at Russian/Ukrainian bases before the conflagration started.

According to another report at defenceBD (06/2014), this was finalized (pardon the English, it was probably a junior media writer). At any rate - there may be further augmentation with additional squadrons of MiG-29 SMT.

"Bangladesh Air Force is finally upgrading it's fleet of Mig-29SE into Mig-29SMT standard

Bangladesh Air Force currently operates eight Mig-29SE.

Bangladesh's two neighbours, India and Myanmar each have 69 Mig-29UPG and 31 Mig-29B/C respectively.

India previously offered Bangladesh to upgrade it's Mig-29SE into Mig-29SMT standard. The deal was not finalized.

Currently Myanmar is displaying very aggressive behavior towards Bangladesh as a neighbour. The Govt. in Myanmar fears that Bangladesh may invade Myanmar. They are planning to buy 24 Mig-35 or Su-35 in 2014. USD 1 Billion has been allocated for buying Aircraft in the 2014 budget.

After upgradation to SMT standard, Bangladesh AF MiG-29 aircraft will be able to fire the R-77 BVR Missile. Bangladesh has already purchased a number of R-77 BVR missiles in 2013.

MiG-29SMT main features:
– Modern high precision weapons of "A-S" class are included into the weapons nomenclature. It is provided for the weapons nomenclature enhancement during aircraft life cycle.
– The aircraft is equipped with multifunctional multi-mode pulse-Doppler airborne "Zhuk-ME" radar manufactured by "Fazotron-NIIP" Corporation. The radar is provided with a slot antenna array. As compared with the airborne radar of the previous generation the "Zhuk-ME" has enhanced scanning angles in azimuth, twice increased detection range, less weight and higher reliability. The "Zhuk-ME" radar provides for tracking up to 10 air targets with capability of simultaneous firing of 4 targets with missiles.
– The airborne avionics of the MiG-29SMT aircraft is designed following the principle of open architecture on the basis of a mission computer with the data exchange multiplex channel (bus of MIL STD 1553B standard). It allows to install aboard the aircraft the new systems of Russian or foreign origin at the customer’s request.
– The cockpit data display system includes two new wide-screen MFD-10-6 multifunction color displays and realizes the HOTAS conception.
– INS-GPS navigation system is included into the navigation equipment.
– The aircraft is equipped with in-flight refueling system."

Bangladesh - Air Force Modernization

well do you realli think such information comes from so called "proper source" :azn:

have a nice day sirji :D

" proper sources" stop your BS. Half of my family are still serving in the BAF and there has never been any "talks" to buy any weapon systems from India (either Indian or Russian) for the last 40 years period. This will not change as the MOD and armed forces that decide the weapon systems to order not the current government.

Can you show me 1 just 1 major weapon system the Bangladesh Armed Forces bought from India in the past 40 years?

We maintain our existing migs inhouse ourselves....there is nothing you can show us there that we don't know. And why would we consult you and not the Russians directly?

As far as BAF consulting IAF, this simply did not happen. It is not the case that we are refusing to believe it happened but rather the case that we would know if it did.

Still su30 is overkill and maintenance intensive...Saab gripen or F16 would be good choice imo

Too expensive for BD when you consider the full cost of setting up maintenance, training etc. also western systems comes with political and economic strings.

Best bang for bucks would be to build on what's already there .... I wish it was not the case but financial limitation is a massive constraint for BAF

Bilal,

Are you saying myanmer is still on course to buy futher Russian jets? As has been reported they have purchased the JF17. One assumes that's it.... If they go on to purchase more migs/su whatever that may force an acceleration of the 2030 forces goal.

I really don't see the Burmese as much of a threat.... They have already given up bothering to protect their border with india and we share a minuscule border.

BD won't start anything cause there is nothing to gain but the Burmese are knuckle dragging apes hell bent on murdering their minorities thus very erratic.....

Well, some of JF for maritime strike.. it will highly improve the naval power...and it will be a threat for air defence-less BD ships.. we also consider to add some heavy fighters for AF and it will be from Russia..

We never think BD as a thread.. but Bd must think twice every its offensive steps dealing with Myanmar.. or i think U know the result of previous incidents.. :P

From what I know and have reviewed, Myanmar's AF is hardly in a position to regularly maintain their existing MiG 29se with properly trained personnel and spares, much less take on challenges for more sophisticated jets.

The SLORC has already realized that defense expenditure has to be reigned in as they untie the choking noose of economic control over Myanmar economy slowly and liberalize it. Especially when the state of their economy is in such dire shape.

I'd bet comfortably that SU-30 is not on the shopping list for Myanmar AF at this time. They will be quite happy with JF-17 for now...

BD Govt. is not in a mood either to start a unsustainable and unproductive conflagration.

The Rakhine state anti-Muslim vigilantes will also be reigned in as public sentiment slowly turns the corner...

Good that you have first hand info which even your Air Force personnel don't have. You are contradicting Jane's and other credible Western sources. But - to each his own.
