Azerbaijan said set to buy Iron Dome batteries from Israel

Unconfirmed claim in local press comes weeks after neighboring rival Armenia showed off new Russian-made ballistic missiles

Israel will sell batteries of its Iron Dome missile defense system to regional ally Azerbaijan, unconfirmed reports in that country’s media claimed on Tuesday.

An Azeri lawmaker told local outlets that the short-range missile defense batteries were ready for delivery. There was no indication of when they were to arrive, however.

The announcement in the Azeri press came weeks after Armenia showcased its newly acquired Russian-made Iskander short-range missile batteries in its Independence Day parade on September 21.

Tuesday’s reports could not be independently confirmed. Earlier this year a former Azeri military commander claimed the country had already purchased four of the missile defense batteries from Israel.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have warred for years over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but ruled by Armenian separatists.

Fighting between the two sides flared up earlier this year. Armenian forces claimed Azerbaijan deployed Israeli-made kamikaze drones in a battle against Armenian “volunteers.” A video released online claimed to show the Harop drone carry out a strike on a bus, killing several.

Azerbaijan is Israel’s biggest oil supplier, a key recipient of Israeli arms, and a partner in a complicated three-way dance with Iran.

The two countries signed a $1.4 billion defense deal in February 2012 which focused on drones and missile defense systems.

I'd think that David Sling or Arrow 2 would be more suitable to deal with iskander threat

Azerbaijan bought Iron Dome shield from Israel, parliamentarian claims


Jewish Azeri parliamentarian boasted defense shield would fend off Armenia's Russian-produced missiles
Azerbaijan has acquired Israel's highly rated Iron Dome missile defense shield as part of its efforts to bulwark against regional foe Armenia, a parliamentarian was cited by local media as saying.

Yevda Abramov boasted that "The Iron Dome will not allow the "Iskander" missiles to land on Azeri ground," referring to missiles supplied by Russia to Armenia and paraded in Yerevan.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have feuded over Nagorny Karabakh since Armenian separatists seized the landlocked territory in a war that claimed some 30,000 lives in the early 1990s.

The two sides never signed a firm peace deal despite a 1994 ceasefire and have regularly exchanged fire across the front line; this year, an unprecedented spike in violence claimed he lives of at least 110 people from all sides.

Abramov belongs to Azerbaijan's Jewish community; three of his children live in Israel and one of his sons is an Israel Defense Forces officer.

He said the defense shield is "ready for shipment," providing no further details.

Israel has ties with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and has reportedly sold munitions to Azerbaijan.

In April, an Israeli-produced suicide drone deployed by Azerbaijani army killed seven Armenians. The drone, identified by the as an Israeli Aerospace Industries Harop loitering munition, was filmed flying over the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Iron Dome system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., has been touted as the most sophisticated of its kind in the world, with a reported 90 percent success rate during Israel's 2014 conflict with Gaza.

Israel to ship Iron Dome air defense system to Azerbaijan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Israel will soon deliver to Azerbaijanan Iron Dome air defense system, Newz.az reports.

According local media sources, Azeri MP Yevda Abramov said the system is ready to be delivered to the South Caucasus country.

The move comes after Armenia at a parade marking the 25th anniversary of independence demonstrated Iskander ballistic missile systems along with various kinds of Russian military hardware.
