Best Places to See Autumn Colors in China
Published: Sep. 20, 2016

Golden autumn in China is mild and charming. Many people choose to travel during this period. So where are the best places to see autumn colors in China? There are some places commonly recognized as the most beautiful ones, including Mutianyu Great Wall in Beijing, Jiuzhai Valley in Sichuan, Yellow Mountain in Anhui, and Kanas Nature Reserve in Xinjiang.

No. 1: Mutianyu Great Wall, Beijing
Though not as famous as Badaling Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall is a place you’ll never regret for visiting it. In autumn, with all leaves turning red and yellow, the Great Wall is dressed in a colorful gown. Standing on the top, a magnificent breath-taking picture depicting autumn scenes is unfolded before your eyes. It’s 45 miles (72km) from downtown Beijing. Visitors can conveniently take bus 916 Express from Dongzhimen to Huairou. Then, transfer to bus line h23, h24, h35, or h36 to Mutianyu.

No. 2: Jiuzhai Valley, Sichuan
Honored as a palette overturned by God, Jiuzhai Valley in Western Sichuan is a sea of colors, while autumn is the best season to appreciate its beauty. From the valley bottom to the mountain top, various species of trees display graceful postures and colors. Shone by the sunlight, the lakes change colors irregularly. The raging waterfalls hidden behind trees inject vitality to the scenic areas. The ancient villages make the place more mysterious with its unique culture. Visitors can take a flight to get there, or they can also arrive in Chengdu first and then take a flight or bus to Jiuzhai Valley.

No. 3: Yellow Mountain, Anhui
In 2013, the Lonely Planet, a noted travel magazine, listed top ten places throughout the world to enjoy autumn sceneries and the Yellow Mountain was the only one in China having been selected. Some say that if you have not seen the Yellow Mountain in fall, you will never know how beautiful the mountain is. Nature has created a picturesque world there, where grotesque stones, odd peaks, dreamlike cloud seas, and stunning sunrise meet. With high speed train to the Yellow Mountain opened, visitors can easily get there.

No. 4: Kanas Nature Reserve, Xinjiang
Reputed as a small Switzerland, Kanas is the only scenic area in China that has Northern Europe flavor. Every year, it will turn to a colorful world in September and October. The blue sky and white clouds are reflected on the emerald Kanas Lake. On the lakeside, there are white birth forests and red maple trees, providing visitors a feast for the eyes. To get there, a stopover in Urumqi is recommended.

Top 5 Places to Visit in Fall/Autumn in China

1927eb4d73624857a088dd83.jpg

Some places in China are awesome in the fall season due to the brilliant shows of colors there. The leaves show their rich and vibrant hues, with colors ranging from bright yellows to flaming reds. China's fall foliage season lasts from mid-October to early November in north China, earlier in the south. Listed below are some of the best places to enjoy fall colors.

Why You Should Visit China in Fall

Traditionally, fall is thought of as beginning on September 1, when children go back to school. Fall is commonly called "the best season to go to China" because of the combination of dryness and warmth.

China in fall can look as breathtakingly attractive as any place can be. You are suggested to visit China in fall because...

  • It's less crowded than in summer.
  • It's cool with clearer weather.
  • You can appreciate fall foliage.
  • You can enjoy Mid-Autumn Festival.

1. Beijing — Fragrant Hills and the Great Wall

Best time for viewing: Mid-October to early November

Fragrant Hills Park — autumn foliage

Fragrant Hills Park (香山公园) in the suburbs of Beijing is the most popular, and the most accessible, place to enjoy autumn foliage. Pine, maple and persimmon trees dot the landscape, as do many traditional Chinese buildings. Each year after a frost, which usually falls in early October, leaves turn color gradually. By mid-October, the mountain is shrouded by a colorful carpet of red, orange, and purple.

The Fragrant Hill Red Leaves Festival is held each year on the hill in the middle of October. Local families flock there during the festival to enjoy autumn colors.

Trees line the Great Wall of China (长城) for much of its 4,000-mile length. Some of them come up above the wall, so that when you are walking along the ramparts you can see a long, continuous line of red and yellow. Countless tourists have taken pictures of the Great Wall during this time of year — but nothing really matches taking your own!

2. Huangshan — The Yellow Mountains and Tachuan Village

The Yellow Mountains — red leaves and sea of clouds

The Yellow Mountains (黄山) put on a fabulous show of colors each autumn. Leaves show their rich and vibrant hues, with colors ranging from orange to brilliant red. The Autumn foliage season begins in October and lasts to early November. Except for the red leaves, there are many other highlights which are worth seeing such as the sunrise, rocks, waterfalls, oddly-shaped pine trees and sea of clouds. The Mountains are renowned as the most beautiful mountain in China.

The Yellow Mountains are close to other tourist destinations like Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing. A visit to the mountains can be combined with tours to these cities.

The terraced paddy fields wind from the mountain bottom up to the top, like, from a distance, great chains or ribbons as they wind their way around the contours of the mountain slopes in parallel, tiered bands. The period from middle September to early October is the best time to visit, as the fields are golden and ready for harvest.

Rice being grown in terraced fields is a familiar sight throughout the Far East. Those in Longsheng in Guilin Prefecture, in south-central China are the most famous. Tips for Visiting China in Autumn

You will not need heavy clothing, because Chinese autumns, except in the northwest and mountains, are rarely that cold. In the far south, though the monsoon has ended, an umbrella may still be required one day in four. You should bring a camera with you, and comfortable walking shoes.

The Beginning of Autumn

0f6555ff911c71261caa08ad7ee810e7.jpg

The Beginning of Autumn is one of the twenty-four solar terms in traditional Chinese calendar. It comes sometime around the 11th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, or the eighth of August of the solar calendar. This solar term marks the beginning of autumn, with the temperature gradually falling.

When autumn begins, the summer heat is gone and autumn cool is in the air. The weather is mild and crops are about to ripen. So the Beginning of Autumn also marks the approach of a busy farming season. Meanwhile, it is an ideal time for the pests in the field to breed and farmers should pay attention to pest prevention while preparing for the harvest.

64ec2edfef73b19efd76e6b0e4ed9871.jpg

In ancient times, the Beginning of Autumn was a very important solar term. On that day, the emperor would in person lead the officials on an excursion to the western suburbs to welcome the coming of autumn. When returning to the court, the emperor would feast the army, because autumn is the time for troop training.

For ordinary people, there were a lot of customs on the Beginning of Autumn. The ancients believed that a rainy Beginning of Autumn could bring good harvest. For old-style private schools, the day was the school-opening day. It was also a tradition to worship heaven on that day as a way to thank the God of Heaven for bringing a bumper harvest. In addition, people would customarily hold sacrificial rituals to worship the God of Earth on that day.

The Qixi Festival, otherwise known as Chinese Valentine's Day, comes around the Beginning of Autumn. In ancient times, it was a tradition to worship the moon and tell the legend about the cowherd and the weaving girl, with various activities held in different areas to pray for better needlework skills.

The Beginning of Autumn is followed by the Ghost Festival, a day for paying homage to ancestors and seeing off ghosts. There are also lots of festivities going on around the Beginning of Autumn in areas dominated by ethnic minorities, including the Shoton Festival of the Tibetan people, the Five Cereals' Day of the Naxi people and the Fresh Grain Tasting Day celebrated among ethnic minorities in the southwest.

Wow! This place is stunningly beautiful in autumn.
