An Austrian cardinal, thought by many to be a frontrunner for the next papacy, has claimed “many Muslims” are trying to conquer Christian Europe.

The cardinal warned the Christian heritage of Europe risked disappearing, stirring much controversy online. “Will there now be a third Islamic attempt to conquer Europe? Many Muslims think that and want that, and they say Europe is at the end,” Cardinal Christoph Schönborn said in Vienna.

Speaking at the festival of the ‘Holy Name of Mary’, the Archbishop of Vienna called for God to show mercy on Europe and its people who “are in danger of forfeiting our Christian heritage”. He said Europe’s Christian heritage was already being felt as ‘missing by many people’. “What is to become of Europe?” he grieved.

People took to social media to respond to the cardinal’s comments. Some users seemed to agree with Schönborn’s statement. “We should live according to the Catholic faith, it is exactly what Europe needs,” one user wrote. “Not churches, but mosques… Islam brings nothing good of humanity, but oppression,” another user wrote.

However, there were those who believed that the cardinal’s statement would fuel tensions between Christians and Muslims even more. “The difference between the vast number of peaceful Muslims and radical ‘Islamists’ is not yet clear. Our right-wing populists are happy about this sermon. Sad,” one more user wrote.

Some angry readers sought to elicit an explanation from the cardinal regarding his concept of “Islamic conquest” of Europe. However, in his carefully-worded Facebook post, Schönborn only explained that his sermon was not calling to defend Europeans against the refugees. “The chance of a Christian revival of Europe is with us,” he said, urging to “reflect on the Christ’s word and spread it to everyone, even strangers.”

Muslims are going to be a majority population wise due to high conversions and high birth rate. It's inveitable. In here everyone except Muslims practises family planning. They are like on a holy mission or something. Their dedication to their religion is amazing.

Islam is going to conquer all the continents not by the way of invasion but by its numerical strength.

LOL.

"Christian" Europe?

Europeans aren't in danger of letting go of their christian heritage, they already have.

Christianity is a dead horse in Europe with no influence and any central role in society anywhere.

Islam will become a major part of Europe but "conquering" Europe is just a lunatic hyperbole that isn't happening in next 1000 years!

Demographics of Muslims in Europe are stable and won't increase much after reaching 10% of population (PEW research center's study).

So all this hoo-ha is useless.

Stop with this bullsh!t. Islam might become equal to Christianity in numbers but that's it.

Conquering whole world and all continents?

Talk about exaggerated bullsh!t to make Muslims feel 'happy' while anti-Muslim folks carry out their real intentions of converting Muslims in Islamic countries to Christianity (as christian NGO and missionary organizations are doing for decades now), and maligning Islam and Muslims on international stage while oppressing them at the same time.

It's inevitable. My Muslim friends say that it has been predicted in their books that Islam will dominate the whole world.

In other words, lets intensify the crusade and bomb the common people in middle east !

As a Cardinal i would be more concerned about the increasing trust issue of Europeans against the church more than some 4-5% muslim population.

But well, anything related to Islam and Muslims is perfect to divert the attention of masses from the real problems.
