Australian and New Zealand Customs to Fine Visitors who Won’t Give Up Phone and Laptop Passwords

NZ customs need probable cause to conduct a search of an incoming passengers phone or mobile devices. They do not have to right to search anybody's devices indiscriminately. If you don't act suspiciously or do not fit the profile of a person of interest this won't affect you.

People are getting worked up about this without understanding how this works in practice. The main target of this is illegal workers.

I'm going to assume, coming from someone from your nation, that this post is a joke.

Don't worry these idiots don't understand, and I for one am glad Aust has this law.

If it helps keep terrorist fucks out then nothing wrong with it.

Sure.... because a terrorist with an agenda would be carrying compromising material on his laptop, with him. Are you really that naive? Those who are involved in cyber-terrorism will use far more sophisticated means than carrying it in a password locked smartphone/laptop with them.

And like I said, a customs officer who is unfamiliar with other cultures (particularly those with visible martial symbols) can easily use these materials against common innocent people who may have done nothing wrong.

Thanks for clarification.

Most people here assumed that anyone and everyone would be checked.

It's not just people here, people are complaining on social media about it without taking the time to understand this. It will affect a small number of people who are being investigated at the border, mostly for entering the country to work illegally. Other matters this may affect such as drug importation and terrorism are relatively rare matters for customs at New Zealand's international airports.

I'm from Hongkong. Heard of one country two systems. That has made China great as a whole!
We dont have something as low as you guys have implemented.
"Human Rights"?!? STFU NZ!

What can you expect? Remember how the natives were treated? Less than human....

Absolutely.
"Human Rights" according to the "5-eyes" rules!

I wonder why all the indians, local and overseas alike, have been jumping up and down about it!

"terrorists, child sex offenders and criminal organisations to mask illegal conduct." where and what are the criteria to trigger the search?

Dude, they are not going to go through each and every passenger's laptop and phones! They will only search people who they suspect or have a tip off about. Besides its not just about terrorists. Be it drug dealers or traffickers, personal computers are usually treasure trove of information for security agencies.

From what I remember, they have been doing this at Srinagar airport for a long time. They ask you to take your laptop out of the bad and then switch it on.

Let's see how objective that search remains. This is one rabbit hole which can end up becoming a police state like the US has become. Look at the amount of power wielded by the cops there - shooting anyone, detaining anyone and beating up anyone. The scary part is, they do it with impunity even against common folks.

I am all for countering terrorists and catching them red-handed. What makes me a bit apprehensive is just how would they determine it? And what if they are unable to do it properly?

That is all.

As for Srinagar, you must know that things have a tendency to go "boom" in that city very soon. Australia & NZ on the other hand are two of the safest countries on earth.

Let's hope you are right, mate.

I admire your security systems and civil law enforcement so far due to its robust integrity. But just a concern shared that your country doesn't end up becoming like United Police States of America.

Do you even know how the police, customs, immigration work in Australia? It's not like in India where everyone is corrupt.

I have been to your country and it is fine enough. But considering the amount of issues you have for a 27 million population, it is still surprising. By that proportion, you should be like Finland.

BTW, my home state is far safer than any part of your country. So try harder next time.

lol, you have to be kidding, go clean up your filthy country first, I know my country has lots of problems but none like India, wanker.

If you don't know about Sikkim, don't talk.

Everyone has problems but resorting to personal attacks only shows your maturity.

I know how corrupt your country is, I know how your country treats women and children, I know how filthy your country is.
