Australia will stand up to China to defend peace, liberal values and the rule of law: Julie Bishop

The criticism is not hyperbolic. It reflects the incompetence of the Abbot administration.

Many countries around the world have mutual conflicts. Australia doesn't need to stick its nose everywhere. Australia should have friendly relations with all countries and avoid taking sides. Let them sort out their own differences.

The US is a global hyperpower and needs to project its power everywhere. Australia is not a hyperpower or a superpower. The Abbot govt. should be looking out for Australia's long term interests, which lie with friendly relations with all regional countries, rather than playing America's little sheriff in the region.

Perhaps Australia should rename itself to Ausmerica...

Looks like China's newspapers are lying(not a surprise there)

Julie Bishop to Xinhua: I never said 'stand up to China'

Hmm...the original SMH reported she did. I never knew Sydney Morning herald was Chinese owned.

But really who cares. It's not like words mean much without backing up with action.

This woman took a cheap shot with condescending tone at China without any apparent provocation, and now is back peddling.

The whole world and in particular the Chinese people has read what she said, originally printed in a major Australian media. The headline essentially pitch Australia against China as a national policy. What the bloody hell is she thinking?

Really good going ha, how are Chinese people gonna take this lot seriously in the future?

Was there an actual voice recording of her saying that? If there is, show it to the world and make the world know she is a liar.
But I'm sure the world knows.

The criticism is not hyperbolic. It reflects the incompetence of the Abbot administration.

Shouting unfounded words like "RACIST BIGOT BLA HBLAH" is hyperbolic nonsense. Claiming the government is incompetent is again hyperbole considering they are doing a pretty good job at running the country. Making a few tiny mistakes or not following what some people want is not "incompetence"

You're wrong.

Shouting unfounded words like "RACIST BIGOT BLA HBLAH" is hyperbolic nonsense.

The charge of racism and xenophobia is justified given the Liberal party's shameless sloganeering to "stop the boats" which was thinly veiled xenophobia. YOU may continue to pretend it was legitimate, but plenty of conservative commentators came out quite openly about WHY they want to stop these particular boats.

The incompetence is about foreign relations. I am not debating domestic policies in this discussion. The Abbot government has all but accepted subservience to US policies and abandoned any pretense of independence.

Who are you? Ccp spokesman?

Australia now says China is a lawless and warmongering country. And the only thing you can say is the Australian government is a joke?

No, Australia is right. Chinese don't respect the rule of law and liberal values. The Australians vow to stand up and are ready to defend against chinese aggression. Unlike some cowards and aslicker in the region. From the Vietnam view, the more warships from friends in the SC sea, the better. Hope to see them soon in our waters.

No, China has no friend today. Not even North Korea.
We do not need western friends , because there is no true so called friend ship with those hypocrites

Our Military power and economic power develop very well.

If we have money and market , western hypocrites like Australia will do business with us
They are not saints before money even they talk like saint.
Look at the clown Australia PM, he acts like a bitch, the only thing he concerns is money. What kind of people will praise animal army who attacked his country?

If we have powerful military ability , western hypocrites Such as US and its side kicks will talk about morality bla bla bla

We do not care abut such BS because Mr Edward disclosed USA's ugly face.

China is no threat to Australia, we can maintain economic relations with them and continue ties with our allies. No need for talk unless the extreme happens.

Indeed, we can learn much from Pakistan on religious and ethnic tolerance.
Your tolerance indeed is incredible , you can tolerate your PM praises army who killed thousands AU people.

Your PM really impresses me.

Really? Chinese media is famous as liar and propaganda tool, but intentional misquoting a representative of a foreign country is that we haven't seen before.
Our media might be liar but much better than USA GOV , Edward is the true hero.

It is Australian media that did the interview, they might have a recording.
Anyway, there is no need, what she admitted to have said would have been enough.
Opinion editorial from global times,

Global Times - Bishop owes China an open clarification
Source:Global Times Published: 2014-7-16 0:33:02

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, Australia has denied that its Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, had remarked that "China doesn't respect weakness" and that Australia will speak up in defense of peace, liberal values and the rule of law - even at the risk of causing offence in Beijing, reported The Age and other Australian media.

Before that, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott had publicly praised the exploits of some of Japan's military during World War II.

Remarks like these from top Australian leaders have caused huge displeasure from the Chinese public.

Australia made explanations to China through diplomatic channels, which seems to want to dilute the dissatisfaction of Chinese opinion.

But the explanation lacks sincerity. Chinese society will not accept clarification from Canberra this way.

Bishop's provocative remarks were cited by Australian media, which might have distorted what she actually meant. She could make a clarification through the media. But she has kept mum over these reports, which indicates that she accepted the way her words were interpreted. Now the denial by the Australian side is more like duplicity.

China cannot encourage that some Western leaders criticize China in their own media while later offering private explanations. Some people think an explanation is better than doing nothing. Western media coverage of China has always been like this and there's not much we can do.

In China's diplomatic policies, all countries are important. But no country is so important that we have to curry favor with it, especially one whose foreign minister makes impertinent remarks about China. Australia is not as important as it believes. It is a marginalized Asia-Pacific country, and its importance to China is partly out of courtesy rather than actuality.

An Australian foreign minister careless enough to make such remarks about China shows the true weight of China to Australia. Her malicious attitude also reveals the tough challenge China is facing.

China has been friendly with Australia, but leaders in Canberra persist in making offensive declarations. We can mock ourselves about our international plight, while we can also choose to struggle to be stronger.

The remarks by Australian leaders will represent the image of Australia. This makes us believe that Australia has not developed mature politics and its leaders will occasionally behave irrationally. We may have to expect that it could suddenly change face.

Before Bishop uttered those offensive words, few Chinese were aware of her, but she will soon be forgotten.

In our minds, Australia is an English-speaking country, apt for travel, rich in iron ore and kangaroos and has an opera house designed to look like sails. Bishop will leave a brief impression that Australia used to have a female foreign minister who uttered irresponsible words.
