A muazzin was killed and three others were injured after unidentified assailants stormed into a Shiite mosque at Haripur village in Shibganj upazila of Bogra yesterday evening and opened fire on them.
The muazzen, a Muslim staff of a mosque who summons the faithful to prayers, was identified as Moazzem Hossain, 75, while the injured were identified as Abu Taher, Shahinur Islam and Aftab Ali.
Shahinur was admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital while Aftab and Taher were admitted to the local upazila health complex.
Bogra Superintendent of Police Asaduzzaman said a group of 4-5 miscreants entered the mosque and opened fire on the devotees while they were offering their maghrib prayers. The mosque is run under the supervision of Bogra chapter of Bangladesh Inamia Janakalyan Foundation.
The police, however, could not specify the motive of the attack and said security in the district was beefed up after the incident.
It may be mentioned that one person was killed and about 87 others were injured in bomb explosions in front of Huseni Dalan in old Dhaka on early hours of October 24.
Meanwhile, 10 people of the Christian community in Rangpur, including the Father of the Rangpur Baptist Church, received death threats by a letter yesterday.
In the letter, a man claiming to be Atul Roy, son of Ganesh Roy of Village Uttarpara of Komolpur in Dinajpur district threatened ten people of the Christian faith including Barnbas, the priest of the Baptist Church, and said their time was over and they will die at any moment. “Nobody can save you,” the sender of the letter also wrote.
In the letter, the writer alleged that these 10 people are residing in Bangladesh and converting people of Hindu and Muslim faith to Christianity and asked them to leave the country. Only the Muslim law and rule will be established in country, the letter reads.
When contacted, Baptist Church priest Barnbas said a case was filed with the Kotwali Police Station after receiving the letter.
