Within hours of bombers targeting Israeli embassy workers in Delhi and Tbilisi, Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly blamed Iran an accusation which, if verified, would represent the first confirmed retaliation by Tehran for a series of recent assassinations of its atomic scientists aimed apparently at sabotaging its contentious nuclear programme.
Iran has blamed those attacks on Israel, and repeatedly vowed to avenge them. In statements issued in Tehran and Delhi today, however, it rejected the Israeli charges as the Zionist regimes psychological war against Iran.
Attack identical to way in which Iranian n-scientists were hit - Indian Express
In a statement, Netanyahu said the attack in Delhi and the attempted bombing in the capital of Georgia fell in with the recent pattern of attempts to attack Israeli citizens and Jews in a number of places Azerbaijan, Thailand and others... In all those cases, the elements behind these attacks were Iran and its protege Hezbollah.
The attack in Delhi today carried out allegedly by a biker who pulled up next to the Israeli embassy vehicle and attached a magnetic object to it seconds before the explosion was strikingly similar to at least three attacks in Iran on Iranian nuclear physicists in recent months. The defused bomb in Tbilisi too had been attached by a magnet to an Israeli embassy vehicle.
In a widely discussed article in The New York Times Magazine last month, journalist and author Ronen Bergman described the assassinations of Majid Shahriari and Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, both senior figures in the Iranian nuclear establishment, who were killed after motorcyclists attached limpet mines or magnet bombs to their cars before speeding away.
A third scientist, Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, was targeted similarly, but he escaped. Bergman suggested that Israel and its intelligence agency Mossad were behind the attacks. At least five scientists closely associated with Irans nuclear programme have been killed under mysterious circumstances since 2007.
Todays attack was unlike any other terrorist strike seen so far in India. The limpet mine is a new innovation, and this is the first time that India has become victim of an internationally coordinated terrorist act. Indian investigators were probing the possibility of the involvement of foreign intelligence agencies in the attack.
This is a terror attack against Israel and its diplomats. At this point we are not discussing how it happened but you have already seen the statement made by Netanyahu. Irans proxy Hezbollah has been carrying out attacks against Israeli interests, David Goldferb, spokesperson at the Israeli embassy in Delhi, said.
Mike Herzog, a retired Israeli general and a former top aide to Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak, quoted at length in Bergmans article, told AP, There have been all kinds of mysterious things happening in Iran, and it could be an Iranian counterattack. Its no secret that Iran uses Hezbollah globally, and Hezbollah has the capacity to carry out attacks around the globe.
If Israeli accusations are substantiated, this would be the first time that Hezbollah, an anti-Israel Shia militant group operating mainly out of Lebanon, would have got involved in a terrorist attack on Indian soil. Investigators said it was too early to ascertain the extent of Hezbollahs involvement, if at all.
Avigdor Lieberman, Israels foreign minister, said the attacks against Israeli embassies abroad... just means that the state of Israel and its citizens face a daily threat of terror, both physical and diplomatic... We know exactly who is responsible for the attack and who planned it, and were not going to take it lying down.
Mondays terror attack comes weeks after External Affairs Minister S M Krishnas visit to Israel, the first by an Indian foreign minister in over a decade. A press release from the Israeli embassy stressed that Krishna had, during the visit, reaffirmed the bond between the two countries and retierated Indias commitment to the future.
