B. Sushil Kumar, a commando attached to the anti-Naxal force of Greyhounds of Telangana who was killed in an encounter with Maoists on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border on Friday, was laid to rest here with full state honours on Saturday. The funeral was attended by thousands of people.
The last rites were performed according to Christian rituals at the burial ground in front of St. Paul Methodist Church at his native place of Mangalpete in Bidar district. The funeral was performed in the presence of representatives from Telangana police and
Karnataka police. Before the funeral, the body was kept outside Sushil Kumar’s residence for the public to pay their respects.
He is survived by his mother, father, wife, and three-year old daughter. His father Vijay Bopanahalli and mother Sharada, a native of Zaheerabad in Telangana, are residents of Bidar.
Sushil Kumar joined the Andhra Pradesh police force in 2004 as a constable. He was deputed to Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal force, for the past six years.
Telangana Director-General of Police (In-charge) M. Mahendar Reddy and Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence) Naveen Chand attended the funeral. They also handed over a check for ₹3 lakh to the slain commando’s family, on behalf of the Telangana government for funeral expenses. They are also said to have promised a compensation of ₹60 lakh and a government job for Sushil Kumar’s wife.
Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, Deputy Commissioner H.R. Mahadeva, Superintendents of Police Devaraju D. (Bidar) and Chandrashekar Reddy (Sangareddy, Telangana), and zilla panchayat chief executive officer R. Selvamani were among those who participated in the funeral.
