Coach criticises World Cup ICC plans and Organisation Structure

UAE coach Aaqib Javed, a World Cup winner with Pakistan in 1992, has become the latest figure to voice dissent at ICC plans to reduce future tournaments to ten teams.

The 2019 World Cup is expected to feature the eight top-ranked nations - almost certainly Full Members - along with two other teams who will come through a qualifying tournament in Bangladesh. Ireland and Afghanistan have been given a theoretical pathway to an automatic spot by being included in the rankings system but there are doubts as to whether they will play enough ODIs to reach the top eight.

The current tournament features four Associate nations in UAE, Ireland, Afghanistan and Scotland, following the same format as 2011. Four years ago, the ICC decided to trim the numbers but was met with a wave of resistance and ultimately reversed the decision.

Earlier this month, ICC chief executive David Richardson said World Cups should feature "evenly matched teams". So far in Australia and New Zealand, while there have been several mismatches between Full Members, Ireland have beaten West Indies, Scotland gave New Zealand a scare on the way to a three-wicket win, UAE ran Zimbabwe close and Afghanistan threatened a victory over Sri Lanka.

"I think the gap is narrowing now and every Associate is pushing the Full Members," Javed told UAE newspaper the National. "I am really surprised by the decision the ICC already made that the next World Cup would be 10 teams.

"Which 10 teams? If you look at the performances from some teams, their graph has been going down, like West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. I am not just talking about in this World Cup. Overall, what have they achieved in the past 10 years? Why can't there be pressure on them to improve, or go down?"

He echoed comments made before the tournament by Ireland's Ed Joyce, who questioned why cricket was trying to shrink participation in its marquee event, while other sports are looking to expand theirs.

"It is very unusual if you compare it to other sports," Javed said. "Sports need competition and opportunities for every one. What is there for us in Associate cricket? Ireland have been doing so well for the past 10 years, but haven't gained anything. When it comes to open series, nobody wants to play them. Nobody wants to play Associate teams."

Due to the nature of bilateral agreements and cricket's crowded schedule, Associate nations have found fixtures against the big teams hard to come by. Javed said there should be "an actual punishment" for underperforming Full Members and suggested two ODI divisions of eight teams, with promotion and relegation.

"If after two years there was promotion and relegation, how much interest would be created? This is not rocket science," he said. "Who are the ICC protecting and why are they protecting them? Forget about audience, it is about competition. Once you are a Test nation, you are a Test nation forever, whatever you do. There is no pressure on them."

This is ridiculous by ICC !! What makes football the most played sport in the world? Everyone has equal opportunity to qualify for the world cup!! 203 teams fought for 31 spots. First of all we don't have a lot of nations playing cricket, secondly by condensing these numbers further what message are we sending? ICC does not appreciate small struggling teams? What about Bangladesh, it took them over 10-15 years to finally get into groove.

This is extremely unprofessional. I call for more teams and a bigger world cup, so that this sport can be viewed throughout the world.

ALTERNATIVELY, I THINK 10 TEAM IS MUCH BETTER:

I actually think a top 10 World Cup format, with everybody playing everybody, and then semi-finalists is a better format than what we have with its too drawn out groups phase and then quarter finals. If you had the bottom 4 Full Members joined by 6 Associate teams playing in a pre-qualifying tournament run under the same format as the main event ,with semi-finalists qualifying for that, I think it would prove to be highly competitive and cut throat. On the evidence of this World Cup it would be no gimme for Full Members, and would give the Associates a clear goal to work towards, whilst not just benefitting a flukey performance. However giving automatic entry to the Top 8 reeks of stacking the deck and the closed shop.

Only World Cup Winner and the two teams playing Wolrd Cup finals should automatically qualify, rest Full members must fight for the top 10 teams, relegation system should be introduced.

203 teams fought for 31 slots you say for fifa

4 teams will fight for 2 slots for icc cup

Though I think they should increase the slots to bring in more countries. Soccer is already too popular and it can live with small number of slots, but cricket cannot.

ICC is shooting their own foot. Not only should the number of teams increase in world cup but in every ICC tournament. For decades only 8 teams are regulars at ICC features. This way cricket will be extinct. WC should be played by 24 teams at least. What good is being a champion among 8 teams? This way there is no difference between WC and champions trophy.

There are lot of good cricket team in world our of test nations: From Asia: 1. Afghanistan. 2. UAE, 3 HongKong, 4 Nepal. From Europe: 1. Ireland, 2 Scotland, 3 Netherlands From Africa: 1. Kenya 2. Namibia, 3, Uganda. From America: 1 Canada, 2 Bermuda, 3 USA and One PNG from Australia continent. So Total: 14 Teams which play cricket very well. My suggestion is from the 14 teams select best 10 teams to allow play 20 TEAMS T20World Cup and select best 4 teams to play 14 Team ODI world cup similar to 2015 WC version.

Aqib makes perfect sense. There are several things which need to be done to improve the quality of cricket being played and make it popular among other nations too. I very much like the idea of two tier competition. I will just extend it to three groups of 8 teams each. Top 8 teams playing against one another and then next 8 and then bottom 8. let bottom two teams from each tier play top two teams from the next tier in a four nation tournament, and those who finish on top play the higher tier while those who finish at bottom play the next tier. Then have the world cup qualification tournament between teams of second tier and play the top 12 teams in the world cup. Having less than 12 teams in a marquee even just does not make any sense.

Spot on , anyone looking at this realizes this has little to do with cricket and everything about $$ to the big three !! right now Ireland /Zimbawae & Afghanistan better than or just as good as West Indies/England/Bangladesh. in it, true.

Agree.

the number of test playing nations is dwindling. we need to promote these four nations for they have great potential to become a good test playing side.

But what is their motive behind this reduction in the number of teams participating?

In my opinion,
Top 6 ODI teams should have automatic entry into world cup. 10 other teams should play in a qualifying tournament, top 4 should get entry into world cup.
Ireland and Afghanistan should be given full ODI status, and some of the lower ranked teams like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, West Indies and Pakistan should regularly play with them.

Associate countries have better infrastructure and if given chance can dominate the sport

It all happened corruption in the era of ICC chief Srinivasan's authority....ICC has been destroyed by Indians to the max.

Cricket has become so poor lately

Enourmous bats, flat tracks, batting paradise

The indians have a obsession with making the game as dull as possible 500 runs v 500 runs
