Assad 'welcomes' larger Russian naval presence in Syria

A low life genocidal maniac simply doing what's needed to prolong his reign of tyranny over the muslims of Syria.

Surely you must be referring to the despotic rulers in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, right? There are no bigger tyrants than your Sunni brothers whom you naively perceive as "Muslim"....

Syria won't be bothered at least by Saudi, Saudi is too busy beheading its citizens.

TASS: Russia - No legal restrictions apply to Russia-Syria military-technical cooperation — Kremlin

MOSCOW, March 30. /TASS/. There are no restrictions on military-technical cooperation between Russia and Syria, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told the media.

"Moscow has said more than once that there are no embargoes on military-technical cooperation [with Syria]. There have been none and there aren’t any at the moment," Peskov said. "Respectively, in this particular case one can hardly mention any legal restrictions."

Peskov avoided commenting on critical remarks by Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister about Russia’s military supplies to Damascus.

"The commentary was made by the foreign minister (of Saudi Arabia), so I believe that it would be appropriate for our Foreign Ministry to offer an opinion," Peskov said.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal told the closing session of the 26th summit of the League of Arab States on March 29 that Russia continued to arm the Syrian regime which, he claimed, had lost legitimacy and was killing its own people.

"Sometimes we hear calls for ending military-technical cooperation with Syria," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the third ministerial round of the strategic dialogue between Russia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

"I would like to recall that from the very outset it was aimed at enhancing Syria’s defense in the face of an external threat, and not at supporting Bashar Assad or whoever. That cooperation does not run counter to any international commitments," Lavrov said.

Syria gets Russian arms under deals signed since conflict began: Assad| Reuters

(Reuters) - Russia is supplying weapons to Damascus under contracts signed since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, as well as under earlier deals, President Bashar al-Assad said.

Assad's comments, in an interview published by Russian government newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta on Monday, appeared to contradict Moscow's line that any Russian arms supplies to Damascus were agreed before the conflict began.

"There are contracts that had been sealed before the crisis started and were carried out during the crisis. There are other agreements on arms supplies and cooperation that were signed during the crisis and are being carried out now," Assad said.

"They went through some changes to take into account the type of fighting the Syrian army carries out against the terrorists," he said in the full text of the interviews, excerpts of which were published last week.

Assad gave no details of the weapons being supplied by Russia, the world's second-biggest arms exporter, since the start of the conflict which has killed more than 220,000 people and displaced millions.

Asked about the interview, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not say whether Moscow was supplying arms to Damascus.

"In fact, Moscow has always highlighted that there have been and are no embargoes on military cooperation. There are no legal limitations no us," he told reporters.

Russia's Defense Ministry, contacted by telephone, declined immediate comment.

Russia is a longstanding ally of Assad and is hosting meetings in Moscow on April 6-9 involving some of the more moderate Syrian opposition representatives and Damascus envoys.

Expectations of a breakthrough are low after a first round of consultations made little progress. Many Syrian opposition figures shunned the January consultations, saying they would appear only at meetings that led to Assad's removal from power.
