Yes, a person who names himself after a piece of farming machinery would indeed think that sea routes aren't important. After all, it isn't as if China is the world's largest exporter (the vast majority of which is conducted by sea) or anything....Oh wait.

Exactly, sea route security is one of the primary reason for China naval modernization. With Chinese Navy getting stronger and more able, others will also benefit from the increasing security thanks to the presence of the Chinese Navy.

Now China is paying a heavy price for his mistake.
Mao knew China had to develop the military if China was to be taken seriously and that's why China was able to repel foreign invasions to the Chinese mainland. Mao developed China's missile force and nuclear arsenal as he knew the importance of having deterrence.

China needs at least 5,000 nuclear warheads which can be delivered with the:
1) full range of ballistic missiles (SRBM, MRBM, IRBM, ICBM).
2) conventional powered ballistic missile submarines and nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines.
3) strategic bombers that can deliver nuclear weapons via air-launched cruise missiles.

China also needs the following:
1) ballistic missile defences from land and sea (midcourse interception).
2) hypersonic weapons.
3) energy weapons.

China is developing all these things but the development need to accelerated since China is running out of time to be prepared when the world war starts.

LOL...Deng never made a mistake. It's not wise for you to judge down such one of the decisive leader in Modern China.
A current true modernization will never happen if he didn't open up China in a partial way.

The third world war will be between military alliances, particularly between USA and its Mutual Defense beneficiaries, European Union, NATO and SCO-CSTO and countries aligned to China and Russia and will be more destructive than WWII even if nukes and other WMDs are not used.

Then why is China so eager to expand its navy, and why does Russia want to restore its Pacific fleet ? I heard that China plans to deploy dozen of aircraft cariers by 2020. Until space can become the battlefield, the sea is still the playground for superpowers.

BTW I have already prepare for WW4. There is a heap of stone and stick lying in the corner of my house .

Keeping so many warheads cost a lot of money. I think if the situation change, China has the capability to build 10 times nuclear warheads within a short time. And before that, China will quit Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which will deter enemies.
