Chancellor Angela Merkel said the European Union has a “great strategic interest” in maintaining cooperation with China in the face of a widening list of grievances with the government in Beijing.

In a speech in Berlin late Wednesday, the German leader said the 27-member bloc’s relationship with China will be a top priority when her government takes over the six-month rotating EU presidency on July 1.

“We Europeans will need to recognize the decisiveness with which China will claim a leading position in the existing structures of the international architecture,” Merkel said in a video speech to the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a think tank with ties to her Christian Democratic Union.

Even as European governments cast a critical eye on China’s assertiveness -- above all its move to impose sweeping new security laws on Hong Kong -- Merkel said she’ll aim to maintain a “critical, constructive” dialog with Beijing.

The German chancellor reiterated her aim to complete an investment accord with China, as well as finding common ground in fighting climate change and global health challenges.

You naughty boy  @beijingwalker . Why don't you post a source with the full speech?

https://sputniknews.com/europe/2020...ioritize-relations-with-us-china-merkel-says/

"The US is Europe's most important partner. I realize that cooperation with the US is developing worse than we would want it to. This pertains to climate and trade, as well as the role of international organizations in fighting the coronavirus pandemic", the German chancellor said, adding that it is "in our authentic national and European interest not only to preserve the relations with the US but to strengthen them".

According to Merkel, the EU and the US depend on each other with regard to preserving the world order, peace, and stability in the western political paradigm.

"We should not forget that Europe is not neutral. Europe is part of the political West. If Europe wants to preserve itself and its values in this world, it can only do it by taking control of its destiny and being a reliable partner of the western community", the chancellor said.

Does developing relations with China always means killing your current relations with other nations? Strange mentality you have.

Its your mentality I call into question, when you site Bloomberg I immediately know there is an agenda against the current administration. American's are just wired that way.

In any case back to the topic of German-Sino relations, no one is impressed with China's overt intrusion into domestic European politics over the last few months. Angela Merkel is a career politician, unlike Trump you have to pay attention to what she does not what she says.

It's all going to back to normal, nothing is going to happen.
Need a few more months, some Chinese goodies, then we are bck to business. US otoh will need Biden.

I found the same speech in German sources, it won't get published in CNN mate. You think CNN wants to paint Germany supporting China?

I think China needs to keep Mr. Trump on top of America. Despite of all his rhetoric, he will make the US kneel to China when next US president come into office. He is doing more harm than good to the US, and the by-product of his actions is the world would look to China, rather than the US, for leadership.

True to some extent, but he does crazy things that harms them and US, and disrupts the world trading system.

It's is such crazy stuff to break dependent on US for so many decades.

I have long mention, Trump is good friend of China Xi.
China had been too complacent, luckily we have prepared abit for this scenario else we would have been fck up real bad.

EU elites need China.

European peoples don't need China.

China for the EU elites is a way to have low paid slaves to manufacture cr*ppy things.

High unemployment rates in EU could be lower if we stop buy cr*ppy chinese things.

But elites dont want that, because is more easy use chinese slaves than employ european people.

We need a Donald Trump in each country of EU.

Merkel then:
We cant rely on the USA
USA is an unreliable partner
Trolls then:
The world is uniting with the USA against China

Merkel now:
We need and want to work with China (first country mentiond when reviewing European foreign policy, talking about Chinese economic partnership, trade, shared Africa policies, coorperation on healthcare, climate, poverty allevation)
USA is (still) our most important partner (mentioned in afterwords after Africa, talking about "Western values")
Trolls now:
The world is uniting with the USA against China
