The Indian Army has been asked to procure 50 thousand bullet proof jackets for its soldier deployed in troubled areas of the country on fast track basis.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has passed on his financial powers to Army Chief General Dulbir Singh Suhag to procure these life saving jackets on urgent basis.
"This is really an urgent matter and I have asked the Army to purchase the jackets immediately. For the purpose, I have transferred my financial power to Army Chief for one time," the Defence Minister said.
When the last assessment carried out, the Army was facing a shortage of around 2 lakh bullet proof jackets.
The Government had approved the purchase of 1,86,138 such jackets for the troops deployed in sensitive areas five years ago but due to one reason or other the procurement could not to be made till date.
The tender to buy the jackets was cancelled in 2011 as qualitative requirements had undergone changes. Fresh tender was issued in December, 2012 but it took two more years to come to the stage of trials of the jackets to commence.
Sources said trials were to start 'shortly'.
It is believed that requirement of the jackets have soared in the last five years due to increase in number of new recruits and also wearing down of the old stock. UNI MK BDP NNNN
