Army Orders Probe Against Brigadier Accused of Rape by US Doctor

New Delhi: The Indian Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry (CoI) against a serving Brigadier for allegedly raping a New York-based doctor-turned-entrepreneur last year.

Brigadier Manoj Tiwari, now serving at the Army War College, is accused of raping a woman doctor last year when he was posted as the Military Attache to India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Then a Colonel, the officer is accused of pursuing, lying about his marital status and then drugging her before raping her in his office. Colonel Tiwari returned home subsequently and was promoted as Brigadier in the Army before the complaint reached the Indian Army.

In her compliant, the doctor has alleged that Colonel Tiwari had threatened her not to report the incident then and had even promised to marry her.

May justice be swift if the accused is in the wrong and the punishment be severe (as it is an IA investigation more than likely on both counts) however that last line of the paragraph really makes me doubt the authenticity of all of this, it seems to me there is a possibility that the two of them had an affair with the then Colonel lying about being married promising they would get married themselves and now this Doctor has found out that cannot happen and is trying to inflict damage on him. The slander laws in India are pretty weak and a significant proportion of alleged crimes in India are never proven but there is no real deterrent to submitting a false charge against another.

But let the CoI do their job, far be it from me to question either side in this.

If true this animal needs to have every privilege of his life stripped away from him and needs to rot in jail for a long period of time.

"The officer had apparently assured the complainant of marriage. She has alleged he raped her inside the mission in New York after giving her some sedative since she was opposed to any intimacy before marriage. If the charges are found true, disciplinary action will be taken against the officer," said an official.

The woman, who has saved evidence like text messages, letters and emails to her from the officer, has stated that he broke all contact with her once he returned to India. She has also written to the Prime Minister, defence minister, Army chief and others.

Reeks of relationship gone wrong.

It's her word against the brigadier's. She could be lying through her teeth due to ulterior motives since he refused to marry her.

Let's not jump to conclusions. Wait for the Court of Inquiry to be completed.
