Army chief denies Pak charge, says Indian army didn't cross LoC

Army Chief General Bikram Singh has denied the Pakistan Army's claims that the current tension on the Line of Control (LoC) is a result of Indian Army personnel crossing into Pakistani territory and killing one of its soldiers.

He said this while talking to media persons in Shernagar village of Mathura district in Agra division, where he had arrived to visit the bereaved family of Lance Naik Hemraj Singh, who had been beheaded by Pakistani troops in a surprise attack across the LoC.

Answering to the charges made by Pakistan regarding unprovoked firing by India, he said that the Indian Army has only responded to the aggression shown by Pakistani troops and at no time did the Indian troops cross the LoC as that line is sacrosanct for the army.

He said that the Indian government is doing its best to recover the head of Hemraj from the Pakistani army. However, he refused to comment on the statement made by the Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani that his earlier statements were provocative and suggested a war-mongering spirit.

Talking to the family members of Hemraj, he said that the Army considers every army widow as a part of the family and all their requirements will be met by the army.

Bhagwan Singh, a local resident, said that this is the first time that an Army chief has visited the house of a simple soldier who had died in the line of duty. He said that the villagers have requested the General to have a special army recruitment drive in the village and nearby areas as Hemraj's death has made a lot of village youth angry and willing to join the army to serve the country.
