Any programmer here!!

.
Nop. C++ is very much alive and here to stay :)

OP, go for C++. Its a good idea to have basic competency in at least one programming language no matter what major you are in.
Nope... C++ is difficult to learn for beginners and its use now is almost limited to hardware side and JAVA and .NET C# now are the two main languages for Software n App development...!

Guys, I need your advice. I am studying Mechanical Engineering and lately i realised that i need basic knowledge of atleast one programming language. So please suggest me which language I should learn first..python or C.

C is the basic and easiest of all.

.
suggesting a good book incase you decide to learn 'C'.....

'Let Us C' by Yashavant P. Kanetkar (very good book for beginners, easy to understand, helped me a lot)

.
yea i have done degree in electronics and telecommunication and diploma in Computers.
Mech engineers do need to know programing so they can research on topics like CFD(computational fluid dynamics) and FEM(Finite Element method).
i recommend you to go for
1) C programming in Linux (help u develop programing basics and can be used in programming microcontrollers like 8051,and pic <<VVIP, used for controlling machines )
2) then go for C++ in Linux will help you grasp the concept of object oriented programing and let u write programs for CFD and FEM
3)then go for Matlab easiest to learn and use can be used for Hardcore CFD design and FEM.

.
C is the base learn it and you can easily learn the rest bt why is it in indian defence?
