As per the newspaper reports and talk shows footings, the well known anchor Matiur Rehman of “Apna Apna Gareban” and his team were allegedly mishandled by the staff of newly appointed Federal Ombudswomen against Harassment, Honourable Ms. Kashmala Tariq. According to the brief detail, she got angered on some questions raised by the Anchor during the interview and directed her staff to ensure that the TV team does not take out of her office the recording. It has not at all surprised this senior citizen seeing the general bureaucratic environment in the country we live in.
2. Gone are the days when Honourable people like Mr. Justice (R) Sardar Muhammad Iqbal, Mr. Justice Aslam Riaz Hussain were used to be appointed as Federal Ombudsman or Mr. S.M. Munir as the Sindh Ombudsman. Since early 1990s this trend changed to become more questionable with each passing day. Justice Usman Ali Shah was the Federal Ombudsman mid 1990s. In a press conference in his own office, a reporter questioned as to how he (Usman Ali Shah) purchased a car of high capacity against the Government ban. He became angry that you people were not seeing how much work he was doing in providing justice to the people but are pinning only to a small tiny violation. Another reporter then enquired did he had a tape recorder in his newly purchased car? Installation of tape recorder in government vehicles was banned then. Usman Ali denied that there was any tape recorder in his car. When the press conference ended and Usman Ali Shah took his seat in the car parked outside his office, the reporters surrounded his car and pointed fingers towards the tape recorder visible through the car windows. A reporter remarked "may be the ombudsman sahib never played the tape recorder, hence he was not aware of". Usman Ali Shah like Ms. Tareq flew into a rage and threatened that he could take contempt notice against the reporters. This old man still has that front page clipping of Daily Nawai-e-Waqt.
3. While, no doubt, God has made this nation very fortunate viz given it different seasons, minerals, strategic important place, fertile land, hardworking manpower etc, there is no doubt this nation also is “most unfortunate” viz that it has most corrupt rulers since at least two decades at least. Since Zardari and Nawaz Sharif coming into power most of the names of the newly appointed ombudsmen came into talk shows or columns. How can these “columns talked shows” topic ombudsmen can deliver true justice as was delivered by Justice Sardar Iqal or Mr S.M. Munir? What is real “ability” of such ombudsmen? On the World Bank donation (money!), a Forum of Pakistan Ombudsman (FPO) was formed in the name of “strengthening of the ombudsman system in Pakistan”. The Federal Tax Ombudsman is the President of this Forum. The official website of this world bank donated Forum today Sunday the 11 March 2018 shows Mr. Abdul Rauf as the President of the Forum whereas it is almost 6-8 months completing his tenure Mr. Rauf has gone and one Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera , often mentioned in talk shows, has taken over as Federal Tax Ombudsman and, as a matter of agreed principle, is the present President of the Forum. One who he himself does not know about his “post”!!! The Banking Mohtasib till recently believed, as per his own official website, that the post of Federal Ombudsman since 2010 is “continuously vacant”. The fact is since 2010 Salaman Farooqui the one who was “named” by Rauf Klasra more than twice in his columns, took charge and completing 4-years terms has gone and a further new one Mr. Shahbaz Tahir has since many months taken charge. When this is the “update knowledge” of such appointed people, what real in practice “service” such appointed one deliver to the nation. It is a very logical and sensible question of this too old man.
4. This old man is not that much educated. He got education from fee-free municipality " اسکول ٹاٹ " hence has limited brain. He saw whole life if a question during an interview or press conference is not suitable, proper or to be answered, the universal civilised practice is "no comments". Thrashing in the manner we Pakistanis saw on TV footage, is nothing but deliberate attempt to show "power". Long ago one day I was walking in the corridor of the Sindh Ombudsman Secretariat when a staff hurriedly waved me to stop stand still. Puzzled I asked him why when he whispered Ombudsman was coming. I turned around and saw a man (Sindh Ombudsman) coming out of his office for going out while three four people walking behind him. When they reached near me, even one walking behind the Ombudsman signaled me to move towards the wall. The ombudsman is said to be friend of citizens but this show was for me a "Mughal Shahanshah" coming out.
5. As I read on the internet comments, the Anchor, amongst other questions asked what was her ability on which she was given a seat on the parliament. The last I visited the website of the Federal Ombudsman Secretariat for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace on 11 March 2018. Under the Honor Board, name of the Ombudsman was “Justice ® Yasmin Abbasey” is appearing. Good administrative and good governance. I have a print out of this taken on 11 March 2018 while the Ombudsman, if memories in this old age are not bent to fail this old man, took charge of her office mid February.
