Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, called on the youth of the new nation and said, “When you have got that light of knowledge by means of education and when you have made yourselves strong economically and industrially, then you have got to prepared yourselves for your defense -- defense against external aggression and to maintain internal security.” Even today this quote from Mr. Jinnah stands true. Pakistan is a young nation ready to turn 68 on 14th August. It has even younger population: over 60 percent is under 20 years of age. The United States realizes that and spends a significant amount of its aid money on education sector from building schools to training teachers.
The United States also helps with higher education, and that is the reason last week 125 Pakistani undergraduate students left for the United States sponsored by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP). The students are travelling to the U.S. for undergraduate study as part of the U.S. government-funded Global Undergraduate (Global UGRAD) Program. The U.S. Minister Counselor for Public Affairs to Pakistan, Jeff Sexton, congratulated this diverse group of youth leaders from underserved populations across Pakistan. A total of 250 students will participate in this program during the 2015-16 academic years.
We have said this before and we repeat here that the United States’ leadership believes in a strong and stable Pakistan in the region and it also believes that education brings that stability. We will continue to support Pakistan in its endeavors to educate its young citizens.
