ANKARA – Turkey'smilitary procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), is expected to hold a tender for the country's first national tank, the Altay, after the presidential election. According to sources from the defense industry, SSM has completed all preliminary preparations for the multi-billion dollar tender that will determine the serial producer of the Altay, which is the official name of Turkey's future main battle tank (MBT). The tender is expected to be scheduled after the presidential election that will be held in August.

Defense industry sources believe that Koç Group company Otokar, the main contractor for the Altay MBT development program, seems to be the likeliest company to win the contract; however, other Turkish companies, such as BMC and FNSS that have experience in the production of armored vehicles, are also believed to have a chance in winning the tender.

Altay is the third generation of the MBT, Turkey's first indigenous tank development program. The tank is named after Army General Fahrettin Altay, who commanded the V Cavalry Corps during the Turkish War of Independence.

SSM awarded Otokar the $500 million (TL 1.06 billion) contract, which includes design, development and integration of the Altay and qualification of the tank through prototypes and testing in 2007; the first prototype was publicly revealed in 2011.

Under the Altay project, Aselsan, a Turkish defense industry giant, will be producing the new generation fire-control system and the command and control information system of the tank, while with technology transfer from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem, the Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) will develop the 120-millimeter gun and ROKETSAN, the modular armor of the tank.

However, the manufacturer of the engine still remains unclear, and this uncertainty raises some questions about the project. The candidates for the engine are German MTU Friedrichshafen and the new South Korean engine that is currently under development. In addition, in 2013 Turkey started to negotiate with the Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for joint development of the engine for the prospective MBT the Altay, but it has been announced that Turkey refused joint development with Japan in recent months. Meanwhile, procurement officials said that Turkey aims to replace its German engine with a new Turkishdesigned engine.

The SSM will prepare and execute a separate order for the first lot of 250 tanks. A total of 1000 MBTs are to be produced in four separate lots of 250 units. Every delivered lot is expected to have additional upgrades. If Otokar wins the tender, the company expects to start mass producing Turkey's first domestically manufactured tanks at either the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017.

Question:

Can you guys tell me why Azerbaijan did purchase 100 T-90S Battletanks from Russia and not the Altay? Is the price performance ratio better? No bullshit, just facts please.

altay not produced en masse.
engine.
azerbaijani use of soviet/russian weapons.
the would-be price of altay is unknown (though IMO it'll be around $5,5-6 mil) t-90's price is around $2,5-3 mil.

-Roketsan BKM didn't get any foreign technology for development of armour systems. All are pure domestic. S. Korea just helped Roketsan for establishment of BKM installation.
-Roketsan BKM has capability of design/development/production and test of reactive, passive and hybrid armours
-Roketsan BKM introduces Altay armours as "3+" generation
-Roketsan BKM has developed "Modular, Reactive and Composite armour modules" for Altay MBT.
-Intellecual and property rights of all Altay MBT armours are belongs to SSM. There are some foreign interests but without SSM approval, Roketsan can't export anything.
-Developed Altay armours provide better protection than Leopard-2A4 and M-60T locating in TLF inventory.
-Serial production of armours will commence in 2014.

-Roketsan BKM carried out ballistic armour conceptual design for Leopard-2NG and M-60 tanks modernization projects of Aselsan.

I had a feeling the m 60 would be upgraded. no point of throwing them in the garbage.

So we could potentially have 1000 altays, 350 upgraded leo 2's, 170 sabras, 300 something upgraded leo 1's, and a crap load of upgraded m60's.

Now that is an awesome tank force.

Altay will be ready to produce firstly for Turkish army by 2016. Also, it will use German engine in the beginning. Germany has arm embargo for Azerbaijan. Because of that, Turkey couldn't sell Firtina artillery system to Azerbaijan, only after two years when they use another engine.
Azerbaijan army officials expressed their intentions to buy Altay tanks. I am sure as soon as Turkey can sell it, we will see it in our army.

Turkish and Russian tank concepts are reflecting the different sides of a hill so The requirements of costumers will play a key role in tenders.

Russian tanks can't be on par with Turkish Altay in terms of protection. 64 tonnes Altay with tonnes of reactive, modular and composite armours at each side provides better protection than any Russian tanks that have a weight of 48 tonnes. They are like advanced heavy IFV of NATO.

In terms of FCS; Aselsan optics, thermal detector technology, tank command/control computer and advanced electronic circuits are proceeding one step ahead of rivals in terms of generation/first shot hitting probability/nigh hiting precisious/detection range/firing on move. Aselsan claims that Altay FCS is better than the one Leopard 2A6 have at present.

In terms of mobility:

Power to Weight ratio (T-90S Azerbaijan has): 1000hp/48tonnes: 20,83 hp/t
Power to Wieght ratio (Altay): 1500hp/64 tonnes: 23,43 hp/t
Power to Weight ratio (Leopard 2A6): 1500hp/63 tonnes: 23,80hp/t
Power to weight ratio (M1A2): 1500hp/68 tonnes: 22,05hp/t

Speed (T-90S): 60-65km/h
Speed (Altay): 70-75 km/h
Speed (Leopard 2A6): 70-75 km/h
Speed (M1A2): 70/75km/h

-Roketsan BKM used HEAT and high kinetic power AP munitions on trials of Altay armours.
When can we expect those bro?
