Altaf says ‘MQM to endorse martial law against corrupt politicians’

I would personally support a move whereby the Army - invisibly - engineers a resignation of the present Government and appoints hand-picked Technocrats with the GHQ in the background, looking after important national interests. There is no reason to impose martial law, nor is there any reason to immediately conduct a fresh round of elections. The present assembly can be manipulated appropriately without even needing to engineer its collapse...

In so many ways, we aseeing a replay of the "lost decade" - but this highlights a singular problem, namely that the system Pakistan uses does not deliver, it does not allow Pakistan to walk or run but instead hobble along.

I realize that a Pakistani system is nowhere on the scene and that to many people "democracy" by which they mean Westminster, is a religion -- but something has to be done, because the repeated failure, for the same repeated reasons (kleptocracy, monopoly crony economics, politics based on ethnic and linguistic divides), it does no tseem to me, can go on - the West can feed the politicians more Aid, but that will not solve the underlying problem - namely what kind of state is Pakistan and how can the state deliver to the citizenry.

Pakistanis appreciate the notion of constitutional liberties and a free judicary, and a Market economy - but is Westminster in Pakistan successful in delivering this? When has it ever delivered on this? The most fre and successful periods of Pakistani history were under Ayub and Musharraf - what does that say about politicians and Westminster in Pakistan? Everytime Westminster fails, we hear from apologists that we need more of it not less - what does that mean?, after all, isn't governance about delivering services to the citizenry and not about a small number of politicians appropriating the state and it's benefits and privelages?

Even if what TechLahore suggests does happen, why won't we see exactly what kind of thing happened before in the "lost decade"?

^^ you are so right alibaz , let people choose their leader rather than dictator when they will suffer next time they wil make a bette choice and so on its not a short term process will take atleast decade for good leaders to appear from this murky world of politicians. There are no short cuts or immedate releif its a long long process which we as pakistanis can help provide to our next generations not to invite army. As army's business flourishes in war and civilian business flourishes in peace...! Hope army is wise and does not get carried away

PPP has set world record of corruption. Well, if you guys notice he always either wear sindhi ajrak or sindhi toppi. More like he some dirt in his mind using " Sind Card". But this flood is blessing in disguise which ruined his whole plan, when media attentively show the role of sindhi feudals , how they are systematically killing their peasants by diverting the flow toward the land of these poor people.

Anyone define in deep detail about Sind card ?

Previous reports suggesting that the army is taking over are turning out be true but not in terms of martial law. My highly placed sources in the army, media and bureaucracy say that a national government headed by Imran Khan is to be implemented under the direction of the army. Rumours about this are already circulating in the government and due to this PPP is under intense pressure. The Supreme Court will lawfully allow the army to take over and this news is 100% correct. Initial working has been done and Imran Khan is being groomed for becoming the next President of Pakistan.

either way these fuedals , waderas and jagirdars wil stay a fundamental problem , one thing forsure no one cant touch them. I have heard stories frm people who have visited interior Sind that , most of the waderas have littrally ripped locals of all rights they control their lves , a friend who has happened to spend some time says they even have their own beggers , whole families are locked up and they split and drop them in nearby cities and towns. Also this is very famously known that pir pagara has his own army of few thousand men.

These conditions are also very similr to tribal areas @ KP there is no writ of state.

zameendaar will always win the elections. Whoever has more land will always win.

Elections have no point in Pakistan.

You can't vote against your feudal lord.

It doesn't mean you give in to dictatorship, it means we first remove the Feudal lords from their vote buying powers

He already lost elections on PDF (which once upon a time used to be pro-musharraf forum)......... his future is very bleak considering the downfall in his popularity

When was this? And who won?

yes correct it is a valid point locals cant vote against the dictators , but so is the case with army they cant do any thing against these landlords. So intervention by armed forces will also do no good ,,politicians are mostly from fuedal back ground .. so who else can ?? this sems a stuck situation !

Oh oh!, From the frying pan into the fire - not that Imran is corrupt but I do wonder how the talib will react, will TTP go free?

And to be fair what is that Imran as a single person will be able to do that others have been unable to do?

What kind of state is or OUGHT Pakistan be? How will the delivery of basic services be different under Imran? How should the delivery of basic government services be understood, is local representation and governance a part of such a delivery of services? Should it be?

TTP is a western brand! Imran will kick their a$$ and the reason why he is being selected is because as you said that he is not corrupt. The current gov's repute is all time low and people are not donating anything to it for flood relief. The army has decided to make Imran the next President as he has the highest reputation among politicians. Its only a matter of few weeks before the change

We have a tall order ahead of us. We have to cleanse our society of the half-literate but fully brain washed religo-tablighi element that would impose its black-and-white ideas about right and wrong on the unsuspecting masses. This quarter is hellbent on continuing to exploit the poverty of the majority to brainwash young children in petro-dollar funded madrassas.

To achieve this we need someone who isn't the least bit worried about what the village mullah says. A strongman, if you will. That strongman can only be the COAS in the Pakistani context. As I said earlier, you can put a pretty face to the whole setup by propping up technocrats elected from this very assembly, but behind the pretty face you need an iron fist.

The mullah network must be attacked and undone. This deobandi/wahabi infestation of the '80s and beyond has changed the very nature of our populace and our country. We don't live in the Pakistan of 1947, or 1965 or even the '70s. This foreign funded menace is like a virus that is causing a mutation of our very identity. No more of this nonsense. The state must be aware of what every mullah, in every masjid, is telling their audience. The mullah must stay within his limits; lead the prayer and that's it. No more is needed of him unless he is a true multi disciplinary scholar who has vision that allows him to see beyond his nose.

No society can flourish when there is a desperate drive to pervert the populace and engineer a "grassroots phenomenon" to turn the people against the national interest.

Tech

I can't tell you the delight I felt at reading your post because I very much agree with the source of the problem - but I would point out that beyond the religio-lune, we have the continuous problem of a political elite that simply understands governance as an opportunity to steal -- they are all wealthy and by the time they are done, they will be wealthier still, ask Nawaz.

I also very much agree with regard to a strong anchor, however; it is an individual, we will have a problem, because this individual will put us a bullet, a accident away from disaster. This problem of governance in Pakistan is related to how politics is understood in Pakistan, that is to say, what the political game is - and the rules of that game are in the constitution - a Majlis, a legislature that does not legislate, a judiciary that does not execute the law but instead chooses to imagine that it makes law, an executive innocent of responsibility for the state.

In three years Kiyani's extension will be up, recall Musharraf was once such a hope - but he could not, and neither will any individual, hope to go against the system.

To survive as a nation state, Pakistan really needs a conversation about the religion of Westminster and exactly what it is that the state is responsible for and exactly how it will delver to citzenry.

See, even if we have a stable period of 4-7 years and the size of the economy can be doubled (it's possible), we will then again threaten all that we gained with instability - the problme is of an institutional structural nature and so must the solution be.
