BANGALORE: AlstomBSE 0.18 % aims to make Chennai its export hub to tap the metro-rail market in other subcontinent countries, including Sri Lanka and Pakistan, even as the French industrial bellwether enlists two bankers for running its transport vertical initial public offer this summer.

The transport vertical of Alstom is also keen on partnering Indian Railways by forming "strategic partnership", if New Delhi opens up maintenance functions of railway lines to private players, according to a senior company executive. "The current volumes produced are very small but going forward, that is (making Chennai Metro facility an export hub) definitely a part of the plan," said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, President, Alstom Transport.

For this reason, the company looks to ramp up its workforce by 50% in the coming 12 months, from 750 workers to 1200.

Alstom Transport currently has one contract with Chennai Metro Rail and has invested over 30 million in its India operations, including a metro coach facility and a manufacturing facility at Coimbatore for signalling equipment. Poupart-Lafarge declines to talk about future investments but says India would play a "key role" in its Asian Pacific operations. "For now the market for metros is very small (including in Sri Lanka and Pakistan). But as the market opens up, we will surely be looking at exports (from Chennai)," Poupart-Lafarge told ET in an interview.

The Chennai plant of the Paris-based company was set up after Alstom won an 243 million (Rs 2,073 crore) contract in 2010 under which the company is to make 42 train sets by the year 2015 for Chennai Metro Rail. During the weekend, Alstom said that it delivered two train sets as part of the contract.

Experts maintain that Alstom Transport's optimism is justified as the market for metro rail going to soon enter "boom times", with at least 15 cities in the process of submitting metro rail projects to Central Government

Pakistan should say NO to any business with Alstom India!
Alstom should invest in Pakistan!
Anyway, French should explain the cancellation of JF-17 avionics, upon Indian pressure.

Maybe Sri Lanka but I don't think they will get Pakistan's market.

China is here. Transportation is part of the 5 year $30-50 Billion investment. Recently a verbal agreement was reached with NORINCO to build Orange Line Metro in Lahore. It is expected to be formalized by beginning of April.

Interestingly, this corporation also builds Trains and Tehran next door was offered local production. So cannot rule out Pakistan. In the future we might get the same offer.

They should be invited to participate.

I know very well what they do... but Pakistan should not this world reasons to Invest in India, at the stake of Pakistan market.
Instead we shall ask Alstom to sell to India from Pakistan, but before, this ganja party should be sent packing, to their london flats.

Local production happens only when there are good volumes.
If Pakistan is only building Metro in one or two cities then no company will build a factory for metros in Pakistan.
So either Pakistan plans to increase the cities with Metro, or Pakistan imports the trains.

They should be invited to participate.

Imports are done from the place which has least cost.
If Bombardier or Alstom metro rail are chosen, then odds are the supply will come from India.
If its Chinese, then odds are the trains would be imported from China.

All this is contingent on the order from Pakistan being small. If order size increases, then there would be local production.

We have acquired very good experience in Metro Rail projects as we are running these trains since 1984, especially Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has proved to be one of the finest in building and operating a large metro rail project efficiently within a short span of time. If Pakistan wants, then we can help them with their Metro projects.

Wrong.
They were willing to buy/lease from India.

Indian Railways communicated that its own demands are not being met from the factories, exporting is out of the question. Then after ministerial pressure, India gave a date by which it will fullfill Pakistani demands. That was too long and unacceptable to Pakistan.

As always, our problem is that our state run factories produce too little. Zero excess production capacity. We cant even meet our own needs. Its pathetic.

Add to that,Pakistna wanted to create its own infrastructure which our policy planners didnt wanted thats why we made this excuse.Leasing 50 engines wouldnt have affected us much when we operate thousands of engines.
Although i agree that our production is very low but situation is also not that bad as you are making out it to be.

That's not entirely true, Pakistan is asking for Indian locomotives for many years now, I remember there was a talk about it 10-12 years back, and then again last year they asked for some locos, it was actually us who were hesitant as our own demand is higher than supply.

So what metro rail market in Pakistan the article is talking about??
Don't know, probably talking about Karachi Circular Railway, not really a metro but almost the same.
