SRINAGAR, India (AFP) - A strike protesting against a visit by India's president to Indian Kashmir shut much of the region for a second day, while four soldiers were reportedly hurt in a rebel attack.

Streets in Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar were virtually deserted as shops, banks, businesses and schools closed in protest over President Abdul Kalam's two-day visit, and most traffic was off the roads on Saturday.

Other parts of the state were also hit by the strike called by the hardline wing of the separatist alliance Hurriyat and backed by the powerful Islamic rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin, which is battling New Delhi's rule in the Muslim-majority region.

Security was tight for Kalam's visit. Police reported four soldiers were injured when militants attacked an army convoy south of Srinagar on Saturday with grenades and rifle fire, police said.

Kalam arrived Friday in Srinagar to attend celebrations marking the diamond jubilee of Indian Kashmir's top court and meet government officials and students.

Hurriyat said it had "nothing personal" against Kalam, who is Hindu- majority India's third Muslim president.

But the group said it called for the protest shutdown as Kalam holds the post of "supreme commander" of India's armed forces which it accuses of "committing human rights abuses."

New Delhi says it probes charges of abuses and punishes those found guilty.

On Friday, Kalam urged that civilians in Indian Kashmir be given "special security" if they want to become involved in New Delhi's fight against the 17-year-old insurgency.

Rebels often target people they suspect of helping Indian troops.

The insurgency has left more than 44,000 people dead by official count and at least double that number by the separatists' tally.

president Kalam would think for providing more security to kashmiris. this look like people of kashmir scare of terrorists very much. indian government need to tighten the grip over terrorist organization like Hizbul Muzahedin to reduce threat in kashmir.

I'll let you to form a conclusion, after reading this...

Anti-Punjab strike hits Pakistan

Businesses have closed in a number of Pakistani cities following a strike called in protest against the influence of the Punjab in national life.

Riot police moved in to disperse protesters throwing stones in Peshawar in North-West Frontier Province.

Nationalists demanding greater political and economic rights also took to the streets in the restive south-west province of Balochistan.

Activists say ethnic groups in smaller provinces do not have equal rights.

Buses torched
Supporters of the Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement (PONM) disrupted normal life in Balochistan, Sindh and North-West Frontier Province.

The shutdown was most effective in Peshawar and in Quetta, capital of Balochistan.

Hundreds of supporters of the regional and nationalist groups stayed on the streets of cities in Balochistan during the day to ensure a shutdown.

Reports from the interior of Sindh said businesses in most of the cities there were also closed and there was also a partial strike in Karachi, with shops shut in the suburbs and most public transport off the roads.

A government official said transport companies pulled buses off the roads because of overnight violence during which several vehicles were set on fire.

Three more buses were torched on Thursday morning.

In Peshawar, PONM supporters took to the streets on Thursday morning, throwing stones at passing vehicles and shops that had opened.

Police detained an opposition senator, Raza Ahmed Raza, and dozens of others.

Outlets of the Subway food chain and Honda cars were damaged.

Constitution

There were also reports of sporadic clashes in some parts of Balochistan, but officials say by and large the situation remained under control.

PONM is an alliance of several groups that aspire for greater rights for smaller provinces.

The alliance accuses the bigger province, Punjab, which has largely ignored the strike call, and the federal government of denying people rights in other areas.

They say that people in smaller provinces are not given their due share of jobs.

Its main demand is for a new national constitution to ensure equal rights.

The BBC's Zaffar Abbas in Islamabad says that recently the alliance has been rallying around armed Baloch nationalists, who in their campaign for greater rights have started what is effectively a mini-insurgency by targeting government installations in Balochistan.

Eight soldiers and dozens of local died in clashes at Dera Bugti last month.

indian music is played in almost all the market of pakistan so this menas………….?

pakistani national anthems in kashmir? even pakistan doesn’t have democracy how they will provide democracy to kashmiris? kashmiris will never accept any punjabi dominant “General rule”. this is common sense that no society of the world will accept dictatorship. even other states of pakistan like baluchistan, waziristan and Azad Kashmir (little bit sindh also) are not satisfied in pakistan. this is foolish to think that kashmiri want to be part of pakistan. sometimes few kashmiri like Hurriyat pass this type of comments to do some bargaining with indian government but no kashmiri want to go with pakistan.

MM Sayeed and Farooq Abdullah are part of indian government in kashmir who get 60-65% votes in every election there in presence of 1000s of journalists from whole world. Umar Abdullah is very popular in young generation who has been part of foreign ministry of india. and with all these, indian government fund heavily to her state kashmir. no kashmiri dislike india.:)

Not in disputed territories, and the local Pakistani music is not rejected for Indian music. It coexists.

SRINAGAR: This is infiltration no one will be able to check. For it can’t be seen, and comes over virtual borders. This is not terrorism, but has the potential to turn into an ugly issue of territorial loyalty.

In Kashmir, where people find the National Anthem, Jan Gan Man, unfamiliar, Pakistani national anthem, Pak Sarzameen Shadhbaan, has become a favourite.

So much so that, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) mobiles in Kashmir are buzzing with Pakistani national anthem ringtones.

School kids, college-goers and Kashmir University students have their phones playing their favourite tunes that have come all the way from Pakistan.

"I received it from one of my friends in Srinagar," Feroz Ahmad, a professional in his 20s told Times of India .

In turn, his friend received it from his friend. But the ringtone actually came from the people who have friends and relatives in Pakistan.

"It has become a long chain and it is demanded by friends. I too have sent this ringtone to at least one dozen friends," Majid says.

Pak Sarzameen Shadhbaaan is a well-liked in Kashmir as against the National Anthem, says Aaftab Wani, an unemployed youth.

Aaftab throws light on the reasons to this peculiarity. One, in Kashmir, the National Anthem was never taught to students in schools or colleges. Two, the hatred for India, which is growing ever since 1947, that finally resulted in militancy in 1989-90. Three, the natural love for Pakistan. People in Kashmir feel closer to the theocratic nation -- demographically, geographical and religiously.

"It has been like that ever since 1947. We saw and knew more of Pakistan in more than one ways. We used to hear Pakistan Radio or BBC instead of All India Radio ; we know names of Pakistani states, their daily temperatures and cricketers," Aaftab says.

He adds, "In 1990, when insurgency erupted in Kashmir Valley, people set their watches half an hour behind Indian time so as to match the Pakistani time."

"We still feel as a natural supporter of Pakistani Cricket team," says 60 years old Aslam Beig of Baramulla.

“Even now, Pakistan's Independence Day is celebrated by hoisting green flags around and August 15 - India's Independence Day is marked as Black Day,” he points out.

Besides, there are five Pakistani TV channels Geo , Q , Ary Arynews and PTV currently running through cable network in Kashmir.
"The latest trends in outfits, make-up and other things are adopted here because we feel part of the Muslim society in Pakistan," says Naseema, a Kashmir University student whose wardrobe is full of Pakistani salwaar kameez.

Ali Mohammad, a taxi driver, however says, "This does not mean Kashmiri people want to accede with Pakistan. People just feel closer to Pakistan."

even pakistan doesn’t have democracy how they will provide democracy to kashmiris?
India has democracy? Why not allow their democratic right to choose?

Pakistan too has elections... If thats what your definition of democracy is.

kashmiris will never accept any punjabi dominant “General rule”.
They will, should they choose to accept, get more democratic rights than they've had in India. Plus they won't be killed on a daily basis.

this is common sense that no society of the world will accept dictatorship. even other states of pakistan like baluchistan, waziristan and Azad Kashmir (little bit sindh also) are not satisfied in pakistan.
Yes Dera Bughti had a problem. But almost all the Sardars surrendered recently did you see that not?

this is foolish to think that kashmiri want to be part of pakistan.
Actually we're thinking no such thing. We're doing the humanly thing by saying "Let them choose".

And we're saying they don't want to be a part of India. They might just choose Independence from both as well.

sometimes few kashmiri like Hurriyat pass this type of comments to do some bargaining with indian government but no kashmiri want to go with pakistan.
When was the last time the bargained with you guys?

MM Sayeed and Farooq Abdullah are part of indian government in kashmir who get 60-65% votes in every election there in presence of 1000s of journalists from whole world.
Actually mostly Indian journalist present a clean election, foreigners have oft presented the presence of guns. If that's the case India shouldn't have any problem in risking a UN plebiscite should it? If that's the case people should defy a state-wide strike against the Indian President?

Umar Abdullah is very popular in young generation who has been part of foreign ministry of india. and with all these, indian government fund heavily to her state kashmir. no kashmiri dislike india.:)
Not just dislike they hate em. They are the murderers of a long line of their family and relatives.

Ashim now you have come on the game of references of news papers which has no value in political market. have a look on the reference from the top news paper of US and tell me do you believe in this news which says, "until Pakistan -- and this means not only President Pervez Musharraf but also the military, the people and the political parties, including the religious party, the MMA -- gets serious about shutting down, arresting and otherwise dismantling the militant groups that operate from its territory, it cannot expect to be treated as a responsible player in the region".
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...6071101205.html

so do this means you all pakistanies are involved in terrorism and you people need to shut it down???????????

the references of news papers you are giving have no value. someone said something, they found interesting and published.

come to the truths. the truths are, people are doing voting in every elections and are very happy with current Kashmiri government. journalists from whole world are present there during the elections and in front of them they vote 60-65% every time. this is cross border terrorism which is behind all the problems of Kashmir. first people are trained, then given arms, then sent to this part of Kashmir and then kill those civilian who support india in open and thats why indian military is there. have a look on the link of your first post what it said. i highlighted it also in my first reply.

there is no human right problem in Kashmir. have a look on this link, whole world says india is number one in terms of Human Right performance thats why india get highest votes in this type of elections.

Wonderful- I posted a detailed post on the actual realities in Kashmir today and it has been deleted. Funny!

Why do you gents even require a forum? Since no opposing POVs can exist go ahead & put a line saying all non Muslims, non Pakistanis cannot register!

Munirs antics are despicable. This when I go the extra mile to NOT FLAME and write a DETAILED POST.

Are you gents serious? Are you even being professional when you allow such stunts to be pulled?

All of Kashmir strikes when that indian president visits? But i thought india was parroting the line to everyone that "kashmeer iz an intigrull part af indiaa" so much for that one..

.
democracy gives kashmiris the right to choose their representatives in both state & national(india) level legislatures. they are exercising it for the last 60 yrs , unlike pakistanis.

if the decision of "partition of india" was left for the people of united india to decide(thru a nation wide referendum), pakistan would not have even appeared on the world map. Even the decision to partition india was made by a very minority of politicians+the british rulers.

.
The fact that Kashmiris are voting atleast shows some success in India's plan to keep Kashmir part of India.
No matter how you look at it Kashmir no longer matters in this situation between India and Pakistan if a war does break out. India doesn't want Azad Kashmir Kashmir. They have enough headeaches with the Kashmiris they already have. The next war could be the begening of Balouchistan
Militants or not militants this rebelous up rising will be forgotten in 15 years when Kashmirs feel more Indian. Thanks in all to bollywood. I know Azad Kashmir Kashmiris here who are proud to be Kashmiris and like Indians and India all thanks to Bollywood and its korny flicks.
