Alcohol consumption in Pakistan: Don't mix sin with crime

.
May be....I think its the addiction which ruins you.
Alcohol was prepared by our ancestors to substitute for water I guess as in those days they did not have access to pure water as we have now.
I guess @p(-)0ENiX had once posted an article on this.

Ah no, I don't recall posting any article that claimed alcohol was a substitute for water. The only article I do recall is the one that spoke of Canaanites & their wine cellars. ;)

Besides, alcohol is by no means a substitute for water, & ancient people did have access to drinking water. That's why most of the initial great civilizations of the old world are based around fresh water sources, as in the case of the Harappans, Mesopotamians, Egyptians, etc. The Harappans managed to master the management & storage of both flood & rain water for the purposes of drinking, agriculture, & hygiene. The Achaemenid Persians too learnt to transport water, as did the Greeks & Romans. The Roman aqueducts for instance are a sight to behold when it comes to water supply. The Romans tested the purity of the water by providing an animal or a human with water from a particular source & then observing the being for after affects like diseases, changes in hair colour, etc.

Alcohol back then, just as it is today, was drank during parties or social events for relaxation, to numb physical pain from injuries, or to calm nerves before battle. It was also used an antiseptic for wounds, for instance the ancient Greeks washed wounds with wine to prevent infection. All in all, drinks like wine were also consumed simply because humans enjoy the flavours of various drinks, it's similar to how we have all sorts of beverages today.

oh I thought it was on your tgread that I read about Sailors drinking ale/rum to prevent scurvy. And that because they didnot have access to pure water they preffered the alcoholic drink.
Or something to that effect.

Actually, sailors began drinking rum as a beverage not too far back. The British transported rum on their ships as a trading commodity & the sailors just happened to enjoy the drink themselves. Since many sailors ended up leading a life of piracy for whatever reason, they would continue to consume the drink they were used too, in this case; rum. Scurvy is a disease caused by a lack of Vitamin C, & fruits like oranges & limes while containing a decent amount of Vitamin C, were difficult to transport for long voyages due to them eventually rotting. In order to remedy that, I think some amount of lime or orange juice was added to rum for their trips. Incidentally, alcohol was also consumed to calm sailors during naval battles or during harsh weather conditions, seeing as the prospect of drowning far from home was naturally difficult to digest. Other cultures also report mixing cannabis with tea for a similar purpose.
