Good question, we plan to use AZs even after 2020, some AZs are getting more upgrades such as FCS, gun and new night sights, and Armour protection. Type-59 and 69s are primarily converted to AZ standard. Currently, AZ standard is beign improved.

So we are not planning to retire Type 85 so start new thread and please discuss the latest upgrades being done on Type 85 and any news about MBT-3000

What are the specifications after the upgrade and any active protection system(hardkill or softkill)?

There is an APS to be integrated on AK but maybe not for AZ and type 85s. I heard it is a soft kill system. Upgrade Specs are not yet final.

Dont we have the ukrainian Varta soft kill system on it already? I thought we were going for a hard kill system for AK as well?

Weren't type 85s procured in a hurry as a stop gap? Because they certainly weren't the best....unlike the T80s

Two thing here:

# type 85 were found to be much better in overall performance than t-72 but Chinese could not produce them in numbers as the platform had several new technologies and plaa didn't place an order till late 90s.

The t-80ud was a surprise move even for Pakistanis as Ukrainian s were cash hungry and we needed a stop gap high end tank till the alkhalid was operational. The t-80ud is a especially customised MBT for Pakistan army unlike the Soviet standard t-80u.

Hmm, but Type85s were assembled in Pakistan from Kits anyway? So why not go for them if they are good, rather than the old Type 59/60s?

Even as many were retired, there were still 700+ 59/69 left stranded. AZ upgrade is a new lease of life for them. As for 85, just 300 odd pieces in good condition worth a good upgrade to give the rival 72s a run for their money.

The Al-Zarrar is a upgraded Type 59 so it wont be that good against the T90s the Indians have.

i dont see why not, since they both use the same 1 caliber 25mm smoothbore gun which is equally powerful in either case. Though AZ uses electro slag refined steel gun with chrome platting for extra stiffness and increased barrel life, the latter is what the indian t-90S 2a46-Mx gun does not have. The T-90 does have better armor protection though but the AZ has better apfsds rounds to fire along with better FCS system which is a subset of Italian Ares gunner system installed on C-1 Ariete MBT.

yaar its a common knowledge its in punjab and plain areas. In deserts it will follow the second line of offense/reserves or in area defence duties.
