And why isn't HAL working on increasing the fuel capacity of these VVIP carriers to increase their range in the air?

lol. dont let HAL touch the airplane, if so that would be the end of it.:rofl:. Anyways, I didnt like the name Rajdoot sounds like a cronic decease. How about "Desi One".:chilli:

How old are you, kid :-) (Or maybe I am just old)

It should not sound like a Chronic disease if you grew up in India - it'll sound like a Chronic pain in the leg. Rajdoot was the name of my first motorcycle (OK, probably my second, but I filched it from my uncle). They stopped production in the 90's, but they were dirt cheap to maintain and easily available in the second hand market.
The pain in the leg came from the Kick start literally giving you a kick-back.

"Air Force One" is not the name of the American President's B-747. It is the name of any USAF aircraft carrying the President. When President Obama recently took the First Lady on a trip to New York in a VC-20, (Gulfstream IV), it would be called "Air Force One". The moment the President is no longer on board, it's name reverts to tail # only.

Agreed, Air Force One can be any USAF aircraft. The aircraft assign the name "Air Force One" only when the US president is onboard. Infact NatGeo recently made a documentary about Air Force One. The same apply to "Marine One"( US president's helicopter)

PM, President to get swanky copters

NEW DELHI: After getting three desi versions of US president’s 'Air Force One', the Indian President and PM are now all set to also acquire 12 UPA-2 is on course to ink multi-million dollar deal for 12 swanky EH/AW-101 helicopters which is capable of night-flying
and can carry 10 passengers in VVIP configuration.(TOI Photo)

The multi-million dollar deal to procure the 12 EH/AW-101 helicopters, manufactured by Italian aviation major AgustaWestland, is in the concluding stages now, say defence ministry sources. "The Cabinet Committee on Security will have to give the final nod before the contract is inked," said a source. This will be the third major deal in recent years to ensure Indian netas and other VVIPs can travel in fully-secure comfort in and around the country.

First, the Rs 727-crore deal for five mid-size Embraer 135BJ Legacy jets was inked in September 2003. Then, the 937-crore contract for three Boeing Business Jets (BBJs), with advanced self-protection suites to guard against missiles and other threats, was signed in October 2005.

With the Legacy jets and BBJs already inducted, the VVIPs will also get the 12 helicopters to travel around in style. This, incidentally, comes at a time when the upgrade of the US presidential helicopter fleet is embroiled in a funding controversy.

Though not as high-tech as Barack Obama's "Marine One", the call sign of the US Marine Corps helicopter which ferries the US President, the Indian EH-101 helicopters will have self-defence systems like missile-approach warners, chaff and flare dispensers and directed infra-red electronic counter-measures to protect the VVIPs on board.

The new helicopters will replace ageing Russian-origin Mi-8s and Mi-17s being operated by IAF's elite Communication Squadron, which ferries around the President and PM, just like the Legacy jets have replaced the old HS-748 Avros and the BBJs the two 737-200 aircraft bought in 1983.

The AW-101 helicopters were pitted against the American Sikorsky's S-92 Superhawks during field trials held last year, overseen by both IAF and SPG. The AW-101, which can carry around 40 combat troops but will ferry 10 passengers in the VVIP configuration, and has three engines for better power and safety, was found more suitable.

One particular SPG requirement was that the helicopters have "a high tail boom'' since it would allow the VVIP cars to come right next to the rear exit staircase and not "expose'' the protected persons to a threat from anyone in the vicinity.

Moreover, the AW-101 was found to be a rugged helicopter, with crashworthy and damage-tolerant features, capable of hovering even in winds over 80 kmph. "We also wanted a helicopter with a service-ceiling of over 4.5 km and capable of operating at night,'' said an official.

Well guys I was just wondering if these jets are purchased from a second country like the US and not developed in house, how difficult is it for the US agencies like CIA etc to bug these?

Since these will be used by the PM and President I am sure it will be sanitized by the most competent ppl/agencies in India. But how advanced is the technology on our side to detect highly sophisticated miniature cameras/microphones etc.? Since most of cutting edge US technologies are a state secret, is it possible for any customer country to ensure fool proof inspection?

Also, are there any protocols in place to describe what sort of discussions can go on during the flights? Are national policies, state secrets etc. allowed to be discussed?

You are very right in pointing out that it will not be difficult for the Americans to bug the planes, and i am rather sure too that they must have done it. But you should also realize that there are technological handicaps in trying to bug a movable piece of machinery.

But before we proceed further let me remind you that a few years back when Jiang Zemin was the president, the Chinese had bought a similar plane for him. And when the Chinese intelligence went through the plane they found a lot of bugs placed by the Americans. It nearly became a diplomatic incident, but the important thing is that the Chinese discovered the bugs and removed them. Now when this incident happened China was not popularly assumed to possess such capabilities to smoke out such sophisticated American bugs, but they did. even to the surprise of the Americans. Now how did that happen??

We specifically don't know - but as Chinese capability to smoke out such stuff was very limited then, the Russian hand was suspected and that seems to be the most believable version till date.

Usually when a country goes for such equipment they request their allies who might have better technology to discover such bugs to help then out. And in India's case we have such good allies in the form of the Russians(who are good but not very good) and the Israeli's(who are one of the best in the field). Besides this the IAF must have surely consulted the British, the French, the Germans & other technology advanced countries to learn from their experiences in this matter. Having said that the IAF is itself no walkover, having flown the VIP's over the years they must have certainly gained some experience in this field, to keep the aircraft safe from threats both physically & electronically.

Taking all these factors into consideration, while the possibility of the Americans having successfully bugged the plane cannot be totally ruled out, but considering the means at our disposal to block such an attempt, the possibility of successfully bugging the plane remains rather remote.

I think these features will be also important in the ASW helicopter competition of IN, where the AW 101 and the Sikorsky will meet again.
But next time Sikorsky could have an advantage by producing parts of the S 92 in India togehter with Tata. Will be interesting to see how much this will affect future procurements.

As we know 3 boeing aircrafts purchased for VIP and VVIP travels so now what is the news of Air India deciding what to buy Airbus or Boeing for PM's travel called 'Air India One'.
If 'Air India One's role is to transport PM then What is the role of 3 Boeing A/C namely, Rajdoot, Rajhans, Rajkamal.
I hope you guys can help me understand this.

The 3 Boeing VVIP jets purchased to transport VVIP's have a limited range and seating capacity, so they are largely confined to domestic operations. They are not capable of transporting the PM to distant foreign capitals like Washington DC, with large business delegations that usually travel with the PM. That's were the new purchase by Air India is going to come in handy.

yeah and her husband also has cases against him........this pratibha patil i feel lacks the personality and attitude to be the president of india........she has been unable to reach the masses of india........and her presence isnt actually felt by a commoner......

and the worst thing about her is how she keeps on draping the pallu of her saree on her head. I mean it's okay to wear just the saree if she wants to convey the tradition of the country. But to drape the pallu even when receiving the Guard of Honnor is so uncool. Wonder what foreigners will think when they come to know what the pallu stands for. Talk about women empowerment when the President herself is promoting women subjugation.

So what happens to security threats and safety of VIPs when travelling abroad, reasoning which such expensive planes were bought on par (some what) with Air Force One.
Or does these Air India One also come equip with these security features..
