New Delhi: Afzal Guru, convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in 2001, will be executed soon. Sources say President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected Afzal Guru's mercy petition, clearing the way for his hanging.

Afzal Guru was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court in 2004. His hanging, scheduled for October 2006, was suspended or stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition on his behalf.

Sources say that the President informed the Home Ministry that he had rejected the mercy petition on January 23.
In December 2001, five heavily-armed terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire.

Nine people were killed, most of them members of the security forces. The terrorists were shot dead.

Both houses of Parliament had just been adjourned and several MPs were still inside.

A few days later, Afzal Guru was arrested.

The main opposition party, the BJP, has repeatedly questioned the delay in the execution of Afzal Guru, and its leaders last questioned the government in Parliament on the 11th anniversary of the attack last month.

In November last year, Ajmal Kasab, the terrorist from Pakistan who was caught during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, was executed in a Pune jail in a top-secret operation.

Immediately after that, the BJP asked when Afzal Guru would be hanged.

Afzal Guru hanged at 6.25 am inside Tihar jail

CNN-IBN | 09-Feb 08:19 AM

New Delhi: Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru has been hanged. The Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist was hanged at 6.25 am on Saturday. A recommendation to hang him had been sent to the President on January 23. The President gave it his assent on January 26. Afzal was awarded death sentence by a Delhi court on December 18, 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001. The death sentence was upheld by Delhi High Court on October 29, 2003 and finally his appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court two years later on August 4, 2005. Nine security personnel, including five policemen, were killed when suspected Pakistan-backed terrorists had attacked Parliament. Afzal Guru's execution had been initially scheduled on October 20, 2006. The execution was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition with the President. Even as Guru remained on death row, some political parties and human rights activists claimed that he had not received a fair trial and pleaded that his sentence be commuted. The BJP, on the other hand, demanded that he be hanged at the earliest. The demand intensified after the 26/ 11 terror attack. The BJP accused the government of dragging the matter because it feared losing Muslim votes. The MHA sent his mercy plea recommendation in August, 2011. On December 10, 2012, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that he would examine Afzal Guru's file after Parliament's winter session concluded on December 22.

Super News!! You mess with India... You will just die...:)

Expect a series of such popular moves from now till the 2014 elections...

Its a shame actually that it takes 12 years to hang a guy who attacked the center of democarcy..

I sincerly hoped many times that some of the politicians should have killed at that day.. Then we didn't had to wait 12 years for this..

its not just simple death .....you wait for 12 years ...and die !!!

He would have died million times in those 12 years living in Tihar jail now whats going to happen next to this terrorist is just a formality.

Good move by Indian govt and President...Kasab done,Guru done ..who's next ?

good justice done to victims in delay . pranad mukherji had taken good decisions on culprits of terror strikes unlike pupet ex president prathiba patil.

good riddance..terrorists should not be spared...
