QUETTA: The Afghan border authorities have stopped over 200 Pakistani containers carrying food items to Turkmenistan and other Central Asian states under transit trade from entering Afghanistan via Chaman.

Pakistani border authorities said on Sunday that Afghan security forces also retuned a number of containers which had entered Vesh, the first border town on the Pakistan-Afghan border.

“Over 200 containers loaded with fruits, vegetables and poultry are stranded at the Pakistan-Afghan border,” officials told Dawn. They said the Afghan border authorities had suddenly started stopping the containers without giving any reason or informing Pakistani officials.

When the Chaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry approached the Afghan authorities, they said they took the decision after Pakistani customs officials had stopped hundreds of Afghan transit trade containers loaded with goods in Karachi and refused to clear them.

“We will not allow the Pakistani containers to move to Turkmenistan and other Central Asian states unless our containers are given clearance,”
CCCI President Daru Khan Achakzai quoted the Afghan officials as saying.

According to sources, the authorities in Islamabad have contacted officials in Kabul to resolve the matter as early as possible because the containers are carrying perishable items which will get damaged in a few days.

“The government should immediately step in to resolve the issue because exporters will suffer losses of billions of rupees if the Afghan authorities do not allow the containers to continue the onward journey,”
Daro Khan said.

Haji Ghuos Allah, an exporter, suggested that if Kabul failed to resolve the issue the Pakistan government should not allow Afghan trade with India through the Wagah border.

Reactionary steps from the Afghans from what is mentioned in the article, but it is worth noting that a lot of containers marked for Afghan-transit are actually used by Pakistani and Afghan businessmen to smuggle goods back into Pakistan. It hurts our economy and affects our Foreign reserves. By stopping transit through Afghanistan, they are hurting our economy even further and taking an uacceptable stance against us.

If this continues, the only outcome I see is Pakistan halting all movement of goods to and from Afghanistan. It is going to hurt them a lot more than it hurts us.

It's getting worse the number of stopped Pakistani containers are more than 600 now:

Afghanistan Stops Pakistan Trucks at Torkham Border

Pakistan should shut down their trade for one day and watch how quickly they straighten up.

It's already been stopped by Pakistan from last 3 weeks most of the goods are coming from north and south west.

Tit for tat, eh? But......

So that makes it two tits for one tat! Sucks, what? :cheesy:

That's a dead tit for another tat! 99% of our export to India is by air.

@Sher Malang The 200 trucks contained perishqable items. What is the info regarding 400 trucks more stopped ?

These Afghans need to be taught a lesson - let's just close the border for all their trade permanently, and no overflights for their trade also.

Chaloo koi nahin ! If its a staring contest they're looking for then I'm up for it !

Don't know but the custom officers will only stop containers that could hurt Pakistani businessmen as hard as it can.

Never knew even Afghanistan has leverage over Pakistan over transit. Afghanistan need to diversify her needs, now you even have a rail connectivity with Central Asia.

There is no need to import goods via Pakistani route if they are making hurdles for no reason to our businessmen! and plus throughout history we never imported any goods via Pakistan it only started after their puppet regime aka Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan! and then continued by USA just because they hate Iran and Russkies more than Pakistanis!

Pakistan is proud of her geo position for access to CAR. But if Afghanistan does not allow it, no CAR.. and no Bike :)

We have let enormous free water flow to Pakistan think if we stop it within a decade or so? :D

I think India is already helping Afghans build a dam over the Kabul river.
