KABUL – As the U.S. administration prepares its new strategy for Afghanistan, the Kabul government and its Western allies are working hard to develop an air force that gives government forces the advantage in their war against Taliban militants.

The level of equipment, training and assets falls far short of matching the air assets the Americans still maintain in Afghanistan, but billions of dollars are earmarked for the force which is being built up almost from scratch.

"That is what will provide the asymmetric advantage to break the stalemate on the ground," Brigadier-General Phillip Stewart, commander of TAAC-Air, the Resolute Support mission advising the air force, told Reuters.

A four-year, $7 billion expansion plan is aimed at training more flight and maintenance crews and increasing the number of aircraft in the Afghan Air Force (AAF).

First they provided Taliban world class training, then they armed them with Special Forces weapons, and now they will teach them to be world class dog fighters, wielding top notch planes to finally rid Afghanistan of American influence. Unfortunately the Taliban won't stop at that. Taliban will then follow Americans to the end of the world to hunt them down and kill them. Afghans don't forget easily.

Decades of invasions, trillions of dollars and all of NATOs military power yet the situation in Afghanistan is apparently Pakistans fault...

This is a credit to Pakistan's importance and you are denying it?

It's 2017 and the US wants to build an Afghan Air Force?

You know where the money will end up, in the pocket of some corrupt Afghan general/warlord/politician. The only Air Force Afghanistan will have will be made up of paper airplanes.

What a joke!

Maybe. But the Afghans always return to end up killing eachother. They have been doing that for the last 3000 years at least.

Great, now the US is basically giving advanced equipment to the next generation of militants. Theres a reason why they provided pick up trucks and old soviet helicopters, instead of humvees and blackhawks.

Wont be long before we get a Taliban or ISIS air force. :hitwall:

This could be a direct provocation towards Pakistan. As of now the PAF enjoys , if the pa were to have a limited or full scale war against Afghanistan, absolute air superiority and infact in a two front war against India and Afghanistan war the PAF would completely focus on one border as on the Afghan border anti air cannons would be enough. With even 10-18 new or used f16 from the US the Afghans and Indians would essentially be taking away 10-20 paf planes from the Indian border. A whole squadron from an already over stretched air Force
