Afghan governor's compound hit in gun and bomb attack
Militants in Afghanistan have launched a gun and suicide bomb attack on the governor's compound in Parwan, witnesses and officials say.

At least two powerful explosions were heard in the region an hour's drive north-west of Kabul, followed by bursts of gunfire, witnesses told Reuters.

The governor, Abdul Basir Salangi, told local media that the assault was still under way.

His offices have come under attack on previous occasions.

Mr Salangi said up to six suicide bombers and gunmen had attacked the compound.

"The enemies are still inside the compound," he said. "We are fighting back."

A BBC correspondent who recently visited Parwan found security forces there overstretched.

Quentin Sommerville said under-equipped police in the region were struggling both to resist Taliban militants and a rising crime level.
