FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Afghan forces have captured a Taliban’s military centre in Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province, allowing reconstruction work to resume on key bridge destroyed by floods, an official said on Saturday.
The governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Naveed Frotan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the rebels’ centre was captured during a midnight operation in Kazda area of the district after three militants were killed and two others injured.
“This was an important centre of Taliban because they controlled several areas from this centre. The insurgents were also hurdle in the way of reconstructing an important bridge that connects four districts with
the provincial capital, Faizadab,” he said.
The bridge was built during former president Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan’s government. It was first blown up by militants and then hit by heavy floods.
A resident of Warduj district, Mir Ahmad, said passengers reaching the bridge had to disembark vehicles and walk for 20 minutes to cross it before sitting in other vehicles.
He said patients and people with heavy luggage endured difficulties crossing the damaged bridge.
Ahmad also complained about increasing commodity prices and asked the officials concerned to complete construction work on the bridge as soon as possible.

He said the bridge’s destruction had created problems people in border districts including Zebak, Ishkashim, Wakhan and Sheghnan.
