ANKARA, Turkey — For the past six decades, Turkey and the United States have been strategic partners and NATO allies. Our two countries stood shoulder to shoulder against common challenges during the Cold War and in its aftermath.

peace and continuity within Turkey.” To make matters worse, there has been no progress regarding Turkey’s request for the extradition of Fethullah Gulen under a bilateral treaty.

P.Y.D./Y.P.G., the Syrian branch of the P.K.K., an armed group that is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Turkish citizens since 1984 and that is designated a terrorist group by the United States. According to estimates by the Turkish authorities, Washington used 5,000 trucks and 2,000 cargo planes to deliver weapons to the P.Y.D./Y.P.G in recent years.

sanctions on several members of my cabinet. This decision was unacceptable, irrational and ultimately detrimental to our longstanding friendship.

To convey that Turkey does not respond to threats, we retaliated by sanctioning multiple American officials. Moving forward, we will abide by the same principle: Attempting to force my government to intervene in the judicial process is not in line with our Constitution or our shared democratic values.

Turkey has established time and again that it will take care of its own business if the United States refuses to listen. In the 1970s, the Turkish government stepped in to prevent massacres of ethnic Turks by the Greek Cypriots despite Washington’s objections. More recently, Washington’s failure to grasp the seriousness of our concerns regarding national security threats emanating from Northern Syria resulted in two military incursions that cut off the so-called Islamic State’s access to NATO’s borders and removed the Y.P.G. militants from the city of Afrin. As in those cases, we will take necessary steps to protect our national interests.

At a time when evil continues to lurk around the world, unilateral actions against Turkey by the United States, our ally of decades, will only serve to undermine American interests and security. Before it is too late, Washington must give up the misguided notion that our relationship can be asymmetrical and come to terms with the fact that Turkey has alternatives. Failure to reverse this trend of unilateralism and disrespect will require us to start looking for new friends and allies.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the president of Turkey.

Ok,im guessing you are young so i will try to explain how geo-politics works.
If i think that my ally(US) is working against my interests(supporting the YPG/PKK in Syria),i will try to convince him to change his mind by saying things against his interests( stating the intention of joining the SCO,etc).
This doesnt mean that im actually joining the SCO,it wouldnt make any sense, economicly and militarily.
So,the conclusion would be that leaving NATO and joining the SCO is not in my country's interest,it will never happen.

How does me being a high school student relevant to this debate?

Instead of getting personal, you should focus on discussing the topic at hand.

On topic, Erdogan has not just said it but acting too.

S-400 deal is not figment of imagination. It was a concrete action taken by Turkey against US & NATO.

. .
Which is a very bad tradeoff, F-35 might be more expensive but Turkey was producing parts and was gonna become maintainance hub for them and would make billions just like with F-16s, aside from the invaluable experience in high tech industry.
Not to mention how much more effective a F-35 is compared to Russian junk.

What did Turkey get in return? A system whose effectiveness is questionable and a unreliable partner that cant even honor a ceasefire agreement...
Stop trying to paint it as a victory its ridiculous, its actually the biggest lost in recent decades, i cant believe how erdogan has ruined the work of thousands of engineers and decades of cooperation.
And when i pointed out this fact a while back that S400 for F-35 is a bad move, your Turk Brethren on this forum bashed me to hell and no one agreed with me :disagree:.
Turkish defense Industry is highly modernized and advanced. Backed by well integrated industrial base and access to almost all of the western hardware and technology. It does not want to bog itself down by sanctions by going after Russian tech which was formidable once but now nosediving due to sanctions. Besides F-35 is technologically the most advanced Fighter Jet available to date no matter what we speculate about it.
Anyways best of luck.

The S-400 deal had to be done,geo-politics.
It was more like a ''tit for tat''.

They bash us too when we dare to question the dear leaders decisions dont worry.

So thats why you say Erdogans strategy is good? Based on a prediction that may or may not happen?

Care to elaborate?
First reason ,
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/asia-pacific/russian-s-300s-used-by-3-nato-member-countries/1449436

Second, after huge change in military command after last coup. They want to change there strategic defence policy, where new Russian system accommodated. Recently Turkey faced tech embargo. Where Pak-Turkey 1.3 billion contract hanging. Also , lots of arab rival countries eyeing on this Russian system, but Turkey bid went fast and executed.

.
Turkish defense minister seems ready for some "arrangements" about S400....

Why? Because the ban on US components hurts drastically the Turkish air force F4 and F16 fleet availability.

A little bit late to move back....

well , F35 was for Turkey , S400 was for Erdogan ...

For sure with F35 , some unhappy pilot with some help from USA could bomb Erdogan Palace but S400 can defend Erdogan Palaces against an attempted coupe by Turkish Air force ...

Better late than never.

With Biden in power, there is a window opening for Turkey to return back to F-35 programme. However it will be Erdogan who has to bow his head down a bit. Experts in Turkey knows that they have made a mistake.
